FIELD REPORT (2 DIV LDI 0213) 25 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative but tactical information was limited for PW was separated from his unit o/a 19 Feb 51. Former ROK soldier (9th ROK Div) captured by CCF 30 Dec 50 then turned over to the NKA 30 Jan 51. Information seems fairly reliable.

3. CIRCUMSTANCES OF CAPTURE:
When PW unit arrived vic of CHUCHON-MYON 20 Feb 51, the unit received heavy UN Arty bombardment. PW was wounded and when his unit retreated, he was left behind. Found refuge in a village and 24 Feb 51, headed southward with intentions of surrendering to the UN Forces. Was apprehended about 1930 24 Feb 51.

4. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Disposition:
6th Div arrived 6 km SE of CHUCHON-MYON 18 Feb 51 and 19 Feb 51, they received heavy Arty bombardment forcing them to retreat northeastward. 19 Feb 51, saw elements of the 12th Div in vic 6 km SE of CHUCH’ON-MYON.

b. Strength:
Strength of the 6th Div was estimated to be about 3,000 men. Elements of the 6th Div were 657th, 659th and 661st (code) Regt. Each Regt had about 1,000 men.

c. Weapons:
Weapons in the 1st (659th) Regt, 3d Bn were: 3x82mm mortars (observed 50 rd all total), 4 HMG, 2-3 LMG per Co (600 rd ea), 6 PPSH SMG per Plat (250 rd ea). All others armed with Russian rifles (70 rd ea), US M-1 rifles, Japanese 99 rifles and carbines. Each man carried 2 hand grenades.

d. CCF:
O/a 17 Feb 51, observed about 3,000 CCF troops at rest in vic 30 km NW of CHUCHON-MYON. The CCF had 5x60mm mortars and only about ¼ of the men had rifles. Others carried 5-6 hand grenades each.

e. Operations:
O/a 5 Feb 51, heard from Bn CO that the 4th phase of operation was still in preparation.

f. Clothing:
About 10% of the men wore summer uniforms while others wore winter uniforms.

g. Medical:
Neither heard nor saw any sick among troops or civilians.

h. Food:
Food found in villages was insufficient.

i. Morale:
Morale was normal among troops. Not high and not low.
