FIELD REPORT (2 DIV LDI 0239) 1 March 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was a former ROK in the 7th ROK Div. Since his capture by the NKA, tried many times to escape, but wasn’t able to, because he was watched closely at all times. He claims he hates the Communist. During his interrogation, he tried to help and willingly cooperated. Information reliable. NOTE: PODOL-KOL was not located on the map but PODOL-KOL is also known as YUDONG-NI.

3. CIRCUMSTANCES OF CAPTURE:
After taking wounded to a field hospital in PODOL-KOL (YUDONG-NI) PW and 4 others deserted (12th NK Div) 25 Feb 51, with the intention of returning to their original 7th ROK Div. 28 Feb 51 they were picked up by a 23d Inf Regt patrol, 3 km south of DS3742.

4. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Unit Hq
20 Jan 51 source and 30 others were captured by the 12th Div at YONGMULI and taken to HONGCHON-MYON, ANKUNG-NI (DS0064) where they were held in confinement for over 20 days. While in captivity it was learned that this was the 12th Div Hq. 20 high ranking officers besides 2-300 security troops were observed. At this time there were 100 ROK PW and they were used as laborers to carry food, confiscated in the villages.

b. Disposition
O/a 12 Feb 51 the 12th Div moved to PODOL-KOL, also known as YUDONG-NI (DS2559) where they established their Div CP and Field Hospital.

c. UN PW
The 100 PW were used as litter bearers for the hospital. During the night PW were ordered to pick up wounded from collecting points in KOSI-RI (DS2058) and KHAUNJAE (DS3257). These wounded were brought in from dug-in defensive position on top of mt range running NE-SW approx 6 km ESE of YUDONG-NI (DS2559).

d. Withdrawal
Prior to escaping 25 Feb 51, from YUDONG-NI there were indications that the 12th Div was going to pull out. Troops deployed on hills started to withdraw in groups of 50-100 men each; evacuation of seriously wounded men were hastened; hospital personnel were talking of moving north to rest.

e. Operation
It was also stated by a M/Sgt (NCO in charge) that the whole 12th Div was moving north to vic of HONGCHON to rest and continue their preparation for the big offensive which was interrupted temporarily by the UN Forces. This offensive was said to start sometime in Mar 51.

f. CCF
After source escaped he observed at DS2858, an estimated 100 CCF combat troops headed in direction of mt range where the 12th Div was deployed.

g. Medical
Numerous cases of Typhoid (headache, high fever, vomiting and weak) among troops. Ratio of 5 to 1; no medical treatment available. Many of the men died.
In PODOL-KOL source observed typhoid cases in 4 out of 5 houses. The Army had no curing medicine to give the civilians.

h. Food
Insufficient; although the troops confiscated food from villages.

i. Morale
Very low, because of the high number of typhoid cases. Troops are afraid because the Medics have no medicine and cannot control disease.

j. Clothing
All wore winter uniform.

k. Physical Condition
Weak.
