2. ASSESSMENT:
PW appeared in good physical condition at time of interrogation. He was cooperative and of average intelligence. A farmer prior to entering military service. Surrendered voluntarily when unit became disorganized because of heavy UN artillery fire. Stated he could see no way of escaping, hopeless to fight against superior equipment and men. Information is considered fairly reliable. Speaks a few words of Japanese. Recommend for further interrogation.

a. Unit Organization, Strength and Equipment:
50th Army composed of 148th, 149th, 150th Div, Arty Regt, Guard Bn, Recon Co, Communications Co, Engr Bn, Medical unit, Transportation Bn, Propaganda Unit, Political Unit, Education Regt (Teaches military and political tactics), Wireless Unit, Ordnance Unit and Supply Unit.
150th Div composed of 448th, 449th, 450th Regt, Guard Bn, Arty Bn, Engr Co, Recon Co, Communications Co, Political Unit, Propaganda Unit, Supply Unit, Education Unit, Wireless Unit, Ordnance Unit and Medical Unit.
450th Regt composed of 1st, 2d, 3d Rifle Bn, Guard Co, Mortar Co, Type 92 Mountain Gun Co, Chemical unit, Medical unit, Propaganda Unit, Political unit, Communications Plat, Recon Plat, Supply Unit, Litter Bearer Unit and Staff Sections.

d. Assignment and Intention:
450th Regt assigned to defend vic SANSONG-NI (CS410490).
Heard from Regt CO that mission of 150th Div is to defend the SUWON-INCHON line. Heard 39th and 40th Armies available as reinforcements if need should arise.

e. Disposition:
13 Feb 51, heard from Regt CO that 450th Regt CP located approx 3 miles NE of SANSONG-NI (CS410490).
448th and 450th Regt located S of HAN River, approx 5 km NE of KWANJU (CS4049) as of 14 Feb 51, but believes Regt have withdrawn N of the HAN River.
2d Bn located on Hill 520 (CS414490) as of 14 Feb 51, but disorganized due to sever UN artillery bombardment.

f. Communication:
Telephones and runners used by Co level units. Regt and higher echelons used wireless, telephones and runners. Trucks and carts used for transportation.

g. Personalities:

h. Morale:
Low due to heavy casualties, lack of food and clothing. Many men former CNA soldiers forced into the CCF. Men believe war cannot be won and desire to return home.

i. Chronology:
Conscripted into CCF 5 Jan 49. Sent to TUNGWHA to study communism for three months, commissioned a captain and assigned to present unit. 50th Army crossed YALU River from ANTUNG across steel bridge in early Nov 1950 and headed southward travelling on main roads at night. Army passed thru SINUIJU, ANJU (YD2888), P’YONGYANG, SARIWON (YC4035), and PAEKCH’ON (BT3305). From PAEKCHON, headed east to KORANPO-RI (CT1105) passing between KAESONG (BT8704) and KUMCH’ON (BT8227). Crossed the IMJIN River about 1½ month ago. Continued south to POB-WON-NI (CS1491) and arrived SEOUL. Crossed the HAN River at SOBINGGO (CS2354) and continued to KWACH’ON (CS2344), SUWON and arrived vic KUMYANGJANG-NI (CS4122) where they were attacked by UN forces. PW Regt then retreated to CHONGJA-RI (CS3336), PANGYO-RI (CS3239) and arrived SANSONG-NI (CS400486). Surrendered to the UN forces on 14 Feb 51.

j. Food and Ammo Supplies:
Food procured locally and supply inadequate. Men fed two meals per day. Ammo supply inadequate. No additional ammo received since entering KOREA. Supply movement hampered by UN air strikes.

k. Replacements:
No replacements received by unit. Only severely wounded given medical treatment, because medical supplies critical.

l. Psychological Warfare:
Surrendered voluntarily after reading UN surrender leaflets.

m. Air Force and Navy:
Nov 50, observed 8-10 single and twin engine planes in MUKDEN, MANCHURIA. Planes had red-star markings on their tails.

n. Foreign Advisors, Technicians:
One Korean interpreter assigned to each Co, five to a Bn, and twenty to a Regt.

o. Medical:
Personnel received two typhoid immunizations two months ago in vic ANJU (YD2888). Malaria most prevalent sickness in Bn. Twenty cases of malaria and those affected given yellow and white pills three times a day.

p. Remarks:
PW previously interrogated by 3d Div IPW Team Incorporating 3d Div IPW No 098, dtd 15 Feb 51.

r. Road Signs:
PW stated road mark for CCF units was an arrow pointing to the unit. This marker used for Regt only and designation of Regt was by one to three horizontal lines. For example: One line designated code “1st Bn”, referred to 1st Regt in Div. Marker either in white or black point.

s. Armor, Engr, Chemical & Others:
(1) Unit never issued gas mask.
(2) Did not receive any sort of gas training since entering service.
(3) No knowledge of chemical grenade.
(4) Had not seen or heard of any energy-giving material used by CCF.
(5) Had no knowledge of mushroom poison being used by CCF in KOREA.
