1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was a South Korean who was forced into NKA during early stages of war. Cooperative. Information was limited but seems reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
Force into NK Volunteer Group 2 Sep 50 at SEOUL. Taken to 1st Field Training Center at SEOUL. The conscripts received no training.
Nov 50 at KANGGYE (BA 9738), placed into 15th Div, Med Station as a medical aide.
Further assigned to 15th Div, 1st Regt Med Station as medical aide at INJE (DT 2712) Jan 51.
While traveling from KANGGYE to the place of capture, passed:

Five medical aides took 50 patients from CHAGICHON to INJE where they separated from 15th Div on 6 Feb 51. These five medics, after depositing patients at INJE 8 Feb 51, went in search of their unit, and were captured 24 Feb 51.
b. Location and Activities of Unit: (as of 6 Feb 51)
The Division field hospitals utilized civilian homes as individual situations demanded. As of 6 Feb 51, Div Field Hospital was located at INJE.

  At Regt Med Station, the Political Officers tested the food and water by eating and drinking himself.
  Immunizations were said to be administered at this Station, but the PW had not witnessed any.

e. Food, Ammo and Other Supplies:
PW received a rifle and 30 rd at “CHAGICH’ON”.
Food was procured from villages.

f. Morale and Battle Effectiveness:
Morale was low because most of the troops were South Koreans from ICHON-SEOUL area who had been forced into “Volunteer Corps” NKA.

g. Medical:
Between Dec 50 and Feb 51, approximately 200 troops in 15th Div were afflicted by “breaking” typhus and recurrent fever.
No immunization or other counter-measures were given to the troops.
PW had not seen any frostbite cases but believed there must have been some.
Had not received any medical training. His unit lacked medicine and surgical instruments. There were no established hospitals to the PW knowledge; patients were placed in civilian homes.
Did not know of biological warfare.
The political officer tested the water for its purity. If its small or taste was bad, it was not considered fit for drinking.
Did not know of any medical research being conducted.

h. Psychological Warfare:
PW voluntarily surrendered to UN troops because he did not want to fight.
Did not see any UN leaflets.
