FIELD REPORT (IX CORPS MIDI 0286) 15 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: NYU Wan Fu (牛萬福) (CCF)

PLACE AND DATE CAPTURED: Captured by the 8th Cav on 130900 Feb 51 at Hill 350 (CS473428)
OCCUPATION: Employed at Leather Plant
EDUCATION: Primary School 2 yr

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative during interrogation and gave all information within his knowledge. Information considered fairly reliable. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
114th Div entered KOREA from KAIYUEN, MANCHURIA by train, arriving MANPOJIN 18 Oct 50 after crossing YALU River. There 114th Div detrained and proceeded S with two regt ahead of Div Hq, and one regt in rear of Div Hq. O/a 1 Jan 51, Div arrived at PALSON-DONG (八仙洞) via KANGGYE, KUJANG-DONG, TOKCH’ON, YONCH’ON and UIJONGBU. Units of the 114th Div engaged UN Forces four times during the advance, but date and location unknown to PW because he was with Div Hq during this period.
114th Div departed PALSONDONG 27 Jan 51 after about 26 days rest and crossed PUKHAN River (crossed railroad) over a wooden bridge (about 25 m long), spending a night at village approx 6 Km from above bridge. 27 Jan 51 114th Div proceeded S along E side of PUKHAN River for about 8 Km, then headed SE into unk Mt arriving at unk village after about 16 Km march from point where they changed direction. 31 Jan 51 114th Div crossed HAN River over the ice after about 8 Km of march. 2 Feb 51, arrived at an unk Mt (believed to be Hill 303) (CS642458) approx 3 Km SW from YANGPYONG. 2 Feb 51, moved E crossing KYONGAN-DONG at (CS492500) over bridge and arrived at an unk village 4 Feb 51 (believed to be TOMA-RI (CS475473) where 114th Div CP is located by main road. After regiments deployed in area (within 8 Km square) of Div CP, PW Bn, with Hq troops, dug camouflaged trenches and foxholes around Div CP.
12 Feb 51 PW and 33 others from Div Security Co were sent to 3rd Bn CP of the 342nd Regt located at the N foot of Hill 350 (CS473428) as replacements. On the same day, around 2400 hr 150 troops, including 34 replacements, were ordered to go up on Hill 350. Received arty bombardment while climbing hill. 130400 Feb, 34 replacements separated from others and reached top. Hill 350 was attacked by the UN forces and PW was captured around 130900 Feb 51. Others (33 replacements) were killed by attack and arty bombardment.

b. Organization and Strength:
4th Field Army composed of 13 armies: 38th, 39th, 40th, 41st, 42nd, 43rd, 44th, 45th, 46th, 47th, 48th, 49th, and 50th Armies. 38th Army composed of 112th (12 PU or 1支隊), 113th (13 PU or 2支隊), 114th (14 PU or 3支隊) Div, Army Security Bn, Medical Unit, Supply Unit, Signal unit, Recon unit, Engineer Bn and Arty Bn.
114th Div (15,000) composed of 340th (1大隊), 341st (2大隊), 342nd (3大隊) Regt, Div Security Co, Recon Co, Signal Co, Radio Communication Co, Supply Co, Medical Co, Arty Bn and other units.
Security Co (120 men) composed of 2 plat, mess Sqd, and Co Gp. Each plat had 3 squads.
At present security co strength was about 90.

c. Deployment of PW Own Unit:
As of 121900 Feb 51 114th Div CP was in an air-raid shelter located approx 250 m E of TOMA-RI, close to foot of an unk hill. It was well camouflaged with branches and hard to detect. PW security company CP was also located at foot of same Mt, approx 400 m SW of Div CP. Heard from political officer that operational area of 38th Army was area between YANGPYONG and present location of 114th Div CP. Further heard that units under 114th Div were deployed in area within 8 Km radius E from Div CP. As of 122400 Feb 51, 3 Bn CP of 342nd Regt was located at N foot of hill.

d. Deployment of Other Units:
PW Co CO stated that at unk Mt approx 3 Km SW the 40th Army was on the E side of YANGPYONG.
Heard from political officer before crossing HAN River that 38th, 39th, 40th, 42nd, 50th, and 60th Armies are in KOREA.

e. Status of Arms, Ammo, Supply and Equipment:
He observed about 10 Mt Guns in 114th Div.
As of 121900 Feb 51, Div security company was armed as follows:

2 Feb 51, after crossing HAN River, saw about 10 US Bazookas in 114th Div. 3rd plat of security co was issued about 500 rd of small arms ammo at PALSONDONG.

f. Status of Food and Clothing:
Troops of 114th Div received following goods at PALSONDONG: can meat, pork, liquor, flour and dried fish, and shoes at TOMA-RI. Food consumed by troops was confiscated from villages.

g. Mission and Intention:
Present mission of 38th Army was to defend the position between TOMARI and YANGPYONG.

h. Personalities:
ZAI (fnu) (澤?), 35 yr, CG 114th Div.
LYU Kwang Son (刘廣申), 27, CO Security Co.

i. Physical Condition of Troops:
3 men in PW Co suffered from frostbite and most of the troops from malnutrition because of food shortage.

j. Any Significant Tactics or Warfare Employed by the Enemy:
Div movement was always conducted with 2 regt in front of Div Hq & one to rear. Div deployment always formed a triangle with Div Hq between two rear regt.

k. Propaganda:
PW picked up two surrender leaflets at TOM-RI and another place. PW and other troops picked up leaflets, but since they were not permitted (officially) to pick them up, they did not discuss content.

l. UN PW:
In Nov 50 PW observed 3 US prisoners at TOKCH’ON escorted by one CCF soldier heading N.
