PW deserted his unit 4 Feb 1951 when his unit (8th NKA Div) was engaged in combat with UN troops at Mt UNSAN CS 1145. Tried to surrender himself to UN troops in the vicinity, but could not make himself understood. Therefore, went to SUWON and gave himself up to ROK Police.

b. Unit Location:
Although 8th NKA Div was around Mt UNSAN 1145 when deserted, he believes the unit had already pulled back to SEOUL because all CCF units in this area already retreated and 8th NKA Div was the only Div remaining.
(1) 8th NKA Div Hq: 8th Div Hq was in SEOUL. Liaison and communications between this Hq and units at front were conducted by means of runners. There were relay posts so runners would not tire, which were about 2km apart.
(2) 3d Regt Hq: On hill approx 1,500 NE of Hill 242 CS 1145.
(3) 1st and 2d Regt: Were in hills approx 4 km W of the pond at CS 1045.
(4) 1st Bn: Dug in at N foot of Hill 242.
(5) 2d Bn: Dug in at W foot of Hill 242 approx 1,500m NE of the pond at CS 1045.
(6) 3d Bn: Dug in at E foot of Hill 242 just N of village of SOHA-RI CS 1245.
c. Morale:
PW deserted his unit because he dislikes NKA soldier’s life and he was forced into it.
d. Unit Mission:
8th Div was to recapture SUWON.
e. Identification and Location of Adjacent Units:
The 474th NKA Div (code No) is in INCH’ON.
f. Weapons:
82mm mortar (Russian) - Only one in whole 8th Division, in the 1st Bn, 1st Regt.
PW was in the mortar company, but there were no mortars.
g.Knows of no reinforcements immediately available.
h. The 8th Div crossed HAN River about a month ago at approx 3 km E of SEOUL.
i. No bridging equipment was used since HAN River was frozen over.
j. UN night bombing is inaccurate. UN bombing is directed only at villages and towns while they always hide in hills.
k. Psychological Warfare:
Has not heard UN psychological warfare broadcasts.

The first NKA soldier of his unit who came across CCF units whistled once and clapped his hands three times to signal friendly force.
