ATIS INTERROGATION REPORT NO. 3796 5 March 1951
FIELD REPORT (IX CORPS LDI - 0251) 6 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: LO, Pao Yung (雒■榮)(CCF)
AGE: 30 yr
RANK: Pvt

EDUCATION: Primary School 3 yr
DATE OF CAPTURE, PLACE: Surrendered 010900 Feb 51 at CS576308
UNIT: 38th Army (Code Name 54th Sec), 112th Div (Code Name 1st Bn), 334th Regt (Code Name 1st Det), 2nd Bn (Code Name 2nd Co), Hvy Wpn Co, 3rd Plat, 9th Sqd.

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative during interrogation and readily disclosed information without prompting. He has had a total of 3½ yr of military experience including 1½ yr in the Nationalist Army. Recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
14 Oct 50, 38th Army crossed YALU River at CHIAN, MANCHURIA by rail and arrived MANP’OJIN, North KOREA. Marched south to KUJANGDONG (BV4517). 15 Nov 50 38th Army made their initial contact with UN troops.
20 Nov 50, arrived TOKCH’ON (BV6904) where the Army was segregated by divisions. 112th Div marched southward by way of mountain trails and secondary roads; YONCHON (CT3117), 22 Dec 50, POCHON (CS4394) 3 Jan 51, crossed HAN River at (CS375595), KUCH’ON (CS355574) on 15 Jan 51, vic of KWANGJU (CS3545). Here 112th Div was divided into Bn, the 2nd to which PW was assigned, headed to vic of (CS576308) arriving there on 27 Jan and dug foxholes in the mountains.
311400 Jan, PW Bn was attacked by UN troops. During this attack PW hid in a foxhole and remained there until the following morning. 010900 Feb 51, surrendered to UN Troops who had captured the position. During the engagement their HMG fired for approx 2 hr before they expended their ammunition.

b. Organization and Strength:
38th Army was composed of the 112th, 113th, and 114th Div and an Arty Regt.
The 112th Div was composed of the 334th, 335th, 336th Regt, and Arty Bn, and a Security Co.
The 334th Regt was composed of 3 bn, and an arty btry (Jap M-92 70mm gun).
The 2nd Bn was composed of the 3 rifle co and Heavy Weapons Co. The present strength is approx 300 men. Each Co had approx 90 men, originally 130 men. Most of the casualties were from aircraft bombardment and arty shelling. The Hvy Wpn Co originally composed of 150 men but presently consisted of 30 men.

c. Deployment of PW Own Unit:
Prior to UN attack 31 Jan, 2nd Bn CP was located at an unknown mountain approx 200 m ■■ of (CS576308) at NE slope of the mountain. 4th Co CP was deployed at the SW foot of the hill 173. The 6th Co CP was deployed at the top of hill 173. The Hvy Wpn Co CP was on hill (CS576308) on the SE slope. The 5th Co CP was at the mid section of the hill 256 on the east slope.

d. Deployment of Other Units:
The 1st Bn CP of the 334th Regt was deployed approx 8 km NNE of the (CS576308), 25 Jan 51 (hearsay).
The 3rd Bn was deployed N of 1st Bn.
PW heard from his comrade that 50th Army held sector W from 38th Army.

e. Status of Arms, Ammunition, Equipment, Etc:
Prior to UN attack 31 Jan, Hvy Wpn Co armed with two 80mm mortars plus 21 shells each, six HMG plus 1,000 rd each, nine Jap M-38 rifles, 50 rd each, 7 pistols, plus 20 rd each and 2 grenade ea.
6 HMG of this Co were attached to each Co (4th, 5th, and 6th) (two each).
31 Jan, two mortars of HMG Co were captured by UN troops and also two HMG of the 6th Co. He observed M-38 rifles left behind, when he surrendered.
Each Inf Co was armed with six 60mm mortars plus 20 shells, 50 rifles plus 100 rd each, 7 pistols plus 50 rd each, 3 grenades per men and three dynamite charges.
Observed 4 Jap M-92 80mm guns in Arty Co under 334th Regt at vicinity of KWANGJU 16 Jan 51, each gun was drawn by fours horses, but PW unaware as to where these guns were presently deployed. Each gun had approx 30 shells.
The Arty Regt, under the 112th Div had 4 mountain guns (2 US and the 2 Jap).
After arriving (CS576308) 28 Jan, 2nd Bn received a new pair of canvas shoes and bottle of wine made in HARBIN, MANCHURIA.

f. Status of Food and Clothing
Unit received meals twice a day. Food was foraged for by the supply unit.
No clothing issues was received since crossing the YALU River 14 Oct 50.

g. Mission and Intention:
The mission of 2nd Bn was to defend area (CS576308) at any cost.
Heard from his Co CO that 38th Army will launch a general offensive when it gets warmer.
The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Bn of 334th Regt was to take turns in defending the area (CS576308) with two other Regt the 335th and the 336th respectively.
Each Bn was to defend the area for approx ten days with the 2nd Bn heading the rotation.

h. Personalities:
Lying (fnu) (梁), approx 40, CG 112th Div.
TU (fnu) (杜), approx 42, asst CG 112th Div.
FUNG (fnu) (馮), approx 38, CO 2nd Bn.
CHWANG Yu Chi (莊玉吉), approx 40, CO Hvy Wpn Co.
HU (fnu) (胡), approx 30, Exec Off Hvy Wpn Co.

i. Health Condition:
In PW Hvy Wpn Co there were one case of tuberculosis, Malaria, and four of frostbite 29 Jan 51. These men were sent to Bn Hq.
Average age in his Hvy Wpn Co was 30 yr.

j. Propaganda:
About twice weekly PW attended propaganda classes which were conducted by a political officer from his Co. These lasted for one or two hours. Lessons were: (1) to fight the United States until the end; (2) to be loyal to CHINA; (3) to give North KOREA support.
The unit showered leaflets from UN aircraft several times. The majority of the troops had faith in these leaflets, but the others were perplexed as to whether to believe them or not.
He had heard and was able to understand propaganda broadcasts that were in Chinese. Gist of the broadcasts were “why are you in KOREA suffering from the cold and sleeping in the snow? The longer you stay here the longer you will suffer; if you come to our side we will give you food, clothing, and a warm place to stay”.
He understood the broadcast clearly on two occasions in TOKCH’ON (BV6904) area.
