FIELD REPORT (IX CORPS LDI - 0247) 7 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: WONG Shu Kung(王緖功) (CCF)
AGE: 30 yr
RANK: Pvt
DUTY: Rifleman
OCCUPATION: Farmer
EDUCATION: Primary School 6 yr
UNIT: 38th Army, 112th Div, 334th Regt, 1st Bn, 3rd Co, 1st Plat, 3rd Sqd.
DATE AND PLACE OF CAPTURE: Captured at (CS540339) on 030745 Feb 51

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was healthy and cooperative during interrogation and information considered fairly reliable. Knowledge concerning his organization was limited he was unfamiliar with KOREA. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
March 1948 PW enlisted in CNA 50th Div TSINGTAO. Sep 1949 captured by CCF 43rd Army at KWANGCHOU (廣州). Jul 49 after receiving basic training and communist indoctrination, assigned to 2nd Battery, 1st Bn, 334th Regt, 112th Div MUKDEN (奉天), MANCHURIA.
Oct 50 334th Regt crossed into KOREA from CHIAN (輯安), MANCHURIA. After crossing, saw 112th Div assembled and traveled southward on foot for 10 days. Nov 50 they engaged in their first battle at unknown place. Their second engagement was fought at HEIHUSHAN (黑虎山). From here withdrew and reengaged at TOKCHON. After capturing TOKCHON, PW 2nd Battery (4 pieces Jap 92) was disbanded because they were understrength. PW was then reassigned to his present company (3rd Co) Dec 50. 1st Bn departed TOKCHON and arrived vicinity of 38th Parallel 2 Jan 51. 15 Jan 51 1st Bn crossed HAN River and on 1 Feb 51 arrived 2500 meters N of place of capture, (CS540339). Here the company prepared dug-in position. 030400 Feb 51 he gave himself up to US soldiers who were washing at road side.

b. Organization and Strength (Present):
38th Army consists of 112th, 113th and 114th Div. Not too sure, but he believes these numbers are code numbers of the unit.
112th Div consisted of the 334th, 335th, and 336th Regt but PW does not know the total strength of the Div.
334th Regt consisted of 3 Bn, 2 Arty Btry (100 men) and a Medical Company (100 men).
1st Bn consist of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd Co and a Heavy Weapons Co. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Co have approx 80 to 90 men each. Heavy Weapons Co has approx 110 men.

c. Deployment of PW Own Unit:
3rd Co dug in approx 2500 meters N of the place where he surrendered (CS540339). 1st Bn CP is located approx 2km NE of 3rd Co, with 1st Co in the vic of Bn CP. Another Co was dug in about 2km NW of the Bn CP. The 334th Regt CP is approx 1500 meters from here, on a high mountain (Int: probably Hill 514 (CS550386). Observed these units and their location about 8 days ago when the 1st Bn engaged UN Forces and withdrew to vic of Regt CP. PW Co captured one US soldier during this engagement. During the attack a political officer stated that 2 bn of the 335th Regt and 1 bn each of the 334th, 336th Regt had been chosen to engage UN Forces because these Bn were the strongest units in the Div.

d. Deployment of Other Units:
Political officer stated that the units of 335th Regt were located approx 4km W of PW 3rd Co position (CS540339).
The 38th, 39th, 40th, 42nd and 50th Armies are in KOREA. 1 Feb 51, heard from his plat ldr that the 43rd Army is in KOREA.
4 Feb 51, the political officer told PW unit that part of the CCF 2nd Field Army is in KOREA.

e. Status of Arms, Ammo, Supply and Equipment:
2nd Battery, attached to 334th Regt, has 2 guns (model 92 Japanese made) with 150 rd of ammo. 2nd Battery is divided into 12 Sqd of approx 8 to 9 men. 4 sqd are ammo bearers, 4 sqd are horse tenders and the other 4 sqd are artillery men. Each sqd has one SMG M-3 or one Model 38 rifle.

3 x 81mm (model 92) with 21 rd per mortar
15 Rifles (model 38) with 50 rd per rifle
7 Pistols (German) 20 rd per pistol.
3rd Co
5 LMG (Canadian made) 600 rd per piece
8 SMG M-3 100 rd per gun
2 Carbines (US) 130 rd per piece
10 Kilo dynamite
10 MI Rifles (US) 8 rd per rifle
10 Rifles (model 38) 60 rd per rifle
3 Pistols (German) 10 rd per pistol
5 Grenades per man

f. Mission and Intention:
PW unit was told that they must hold present position until the weather gets warm so that they can start their spring offensive. The companies were to rotate, at 3 day intervals, in defending the position.

g. Personalities:
LIN Piao (林彪), CG 4th Field Army
LIAO Pei Chan(■培農), CG 2nd Field Army

h. Medical:
In his company of 90 men, 3% had TB and about 2% frostbite.

i. Propaganda:
Saw a propaganda unit (20 women) which is attached to either the div or regt.
Having been a former Nationalist Soldier, PW took the opportunity to escape from his unit in order to surrender.
