FIELD REPORT (IX CORPS MISDI - 0299) 20 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: CHA Sung Do (紫崇洞) (NKA)
AGE: 26

PLACE AND DATE OF CAPTURE: Surrendered on 181700 Feb 51 at YANPYONG (CS 6495)
OCCUPATION: Chauffeur
EDUCATION: Industrial School
UNIT: P'YONGYANG Garrison Unit

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative during interrogation and information seems fairly reliable. PW does not have information of tactical value. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
Formerly a member of the South Korean Youth Group. Captured and conscripted into the NKA during Jul 50 and subsequently used as a truck driver in supply hauling.
During Sep 50, withdrew to IWON GUN, TAEDOK (大德面) MYON (approx 60 mile SE of MANPOJIN). During Oct 50, assigned to a trucking company of the P'YONGYANG garrison and moved with them to HUICHON. By the end of Dec 50, moved with unit back to P'YONGYANG. O/a 2 Jan 51, he was selected as driver for Lt Col KIM Yon Un who was then commander of the P'YONGYANG garrison.
Early Jan 51 Lt Col KIM reassigned to CCF GHQ which was at that time located at KANGDONG (BU4837). Soon after, the Lt Col and PW were injured when the jeep overturned in SEOUL, the officer being hospitalized in the NKA I Corps, 18th Sta Hosp.
PW obtained permission to visit his home at YANGPYONG. O/a 4 Feb 51 while driving over the ice across the PUKHAN River at (CS5237) the ice gave way and consequently lost the jeep. PW subsequently continued for YANGPYONG, and remained there until 18 Feb 51 and to surrender to UN forces.
1 Feb 51 left for INCH'ON to get gasoline for his jeep. Heard that NKA 31st and the 32nd Div were stationed there. About the end of Dec 50, 300 men of the PYONGYANG garrison troops arrived at INCH'ON.
7 Feb 51 while traveling to YONGPYONG from YANGSU-RI, saw Chinese troops going in and out from rail tunnel (exact location unk - 2nd, 3rd, and 4th tunnel from YANGPYONG).
172000 Feb 51 at HWAYANGNI (CS665464), saw approx 1000 CCF troops assembled by the south side of river preparing cross northward.
Early part of Jan 51, heard from the Lt Col that the CCF GHQ would be moved to P'YONGYANG from KANGPONG and that the quartering party had already left for P'YONGYANG.
4 Feb 51, heard from a home ministry member at YANGSU-RI that a CCF Div CP was located W of PUK River.

b. Arms, Ammo and Equipment:
Heard from CCF troops at HUICH'ON that most of heavy weapons have been destroyed by enemy air action. In Dec 50, saw at the airfield 6 planes. Heard that the pilots were Koreans but knows no other details.

c. Personalities:
KIM Yon Un (金龍雲), 22 yr, Garrison CO.

d. Korean Pilot Training:
Jan 51, while at P'YONGYANG heard NKA officers conversing that Chinese trained several thousand Koreans to pilot jet planes and that these men were nearly at the completion of their training. Planes were to be furnished by the Chinese.

e. UN PW:
30 Nov 50, saw about 400 US prisoners at KUJANG-DONG (BU4607) and heard from one of NKA officers that these were to be taken to RUSSIA to be given an indoctrination course in communism.
