FIELD REPORT (IX CORPS LDI - 0250) 5 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: SHUI Hai Tung (徐海東)(CCF)
AGE: 21

UNIT: 38th CCF Army, 112th Div, 336th Regt, 1st Bn, 1st Co
DUTY: Ammo Bearer (60mm mortar)
OCCUPATION: Formerly an officer boy with American MP Unit at TSINGTAO
EDUCATION: Primary School, 7 yr
DATE OF CAPTURE, PLACE: 030530 Feb 51 at KOJIAN-NI (CS530344).

2. ASSESSMENT:
Well built and in good physical condition, cooperative during interrogation. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
18 Apr 49, inducted into CNA 32nd Army, 252nd Div, 754th Regt, Sig Co at TSINGTAO, prior to the unit’s departure for HAINAN Island.
21 Apr 50, after the CNA 32nd Army capitulated to CCF 40th Army, its personnel were sent to KWANGCHOU, KWANG TUNG Province, where political training was given for two months. PW and about 3,000 men were assigned to the CCF 38th Army located at KAI YUAN, LIAOSI Province, MANCHURIA. 23 Oct 50, 336th Regt departed KAI YUAN, MANCHURIA by train and arrived at KANGGYE, KOREA 25 Oct 50, at night after crossing YALU River at MANPOJIN. 334th Regt was in KOREA previous to other units of 112th Div.
2 Nov 50, 336th Regt arrived KUNU-NI, via HUICHON, and KUJANGDONG, after it engaged UN forces for 2 day. 334th, 335th, and 336th Regt remained at KUNU-NI for approx 11 days, during which time it engaged UN Forces. 112th Div then withdrew to MYOHYANG-SAN (BU6935) arriving 20 Nov 50. Two days later elements of 112th Div proceeded southward and arrived in the vic of PYONGYANG 9 Dec 50, via TOKCHON, and KAECHON when it fought UN Forces.
2 Jan 51, arrived at UIJONGBU via KAESONG. Heard from his Co CO that 39th and 40th Armies were deployed somewhere along the front. 336th Regt CO also said that they were going to CHUNCHON to engage a heavy concentration of UN troops massed there. When 336th Regt arrived at CHUNCHON 6 Jan 51, UN forces had withdrawn. Therefore the entire Regt headed southwestward on the same day and crossed the HAN River 8 Jan 51, at an unknown point E of SEOUL, using an underwater bridge of rice mats, since the river had thawed. 1st Bn arrived at hill 674 (CS498289) and remained for 20 days 10 Jan 51. 301400 Jan 51, received an artillery bombardment. 310600 Jan, again were bombarded which was followed by an attack by UN Forces in white uniforms. Battle lasted until 1900 hr, o/a 2000 hr 1st Bn withdrew northward and arrived at SOSSANGNYONG-NI (CS495373) 010300 Feb 51. After a brief rest 1st Bn arrived at hill 243 (CS482371) around 1900 hr of the same day. The troops dug 2 man foxholes and slept in them during the day. PW escaped from his unit and was captured 030300 Feb 51 at KONJIAM-NI.

b. Organization and Strength:
38th Army composed of 112th, 113th and 114th Div. 112th Div had 334th, 335th, 336th Regt, and a Mt Gun Bn attached. The 336th Regt was composed of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Bn and an 82mm Mort Co. 1st Bn had Rifle Co and a HMG Co. 1st Co had 3 plat and a 60mm Mort Plat.
Strength of 1st Co was 160 men when it crossed the YALU River but when he escaped there were approx 104 men.

c. Deployment of PW Own Unit:
1st Co and 3rd Co located on the crest of hill 243 (CS482371). Two HMG positions and four 60mm mortar emplacements on top of the hill. 1st Bn Hq and the 2nd Co were situated on north foot of hill 243 with two HMG positions, four 60mm mortar and two 82mm mortar emplacements in the area. Heard from Co CO that the Regt CP, 2nd Bn CP, and 3rd Bn CP were located north of the 1st Bn Hq area. 10 Jan 51 Co CO said 334th Regt was located east of 336th Regt.

d. Deployment of Other Units:
Heard often from the Co CO that 39th, 40th, and 50th CCF Armies were fighting in KOREA. 13 Jan 51, PW heard from his Sqd Ldr at NOGONG-NI that 60th CCF Army was waiting near the YALU River, for entry into KOREA.

e. Status of Arms, Ammunition, Equipment, Etc:
Prior to escape from unit, there were four 82mm mortars in the 82mm Mort Co; two 60mm mortars (10 rd) Rifle Co, 4 HMG to each Co. All men had Jap 38 rifles with 50-60 rd and about 3 hand grenades. Observed 2 wooden boxes in Co which he believed were mines. The last issue of ammo received at KAECHON by the 336th Regt were as follows: 50 rd per rifle; 1,000 rd per HMG; 2 hand grenades ea man; 500 rd per LMG; and 45 rd per 60mm mortar. Heard from the Co CO that ammunition was shipped from MANCHURIA.
Since no food ration were sent from the rear, food consumed by the troops of his Bn was confiscated from villagers.
Shoes were also received by the troops when they received their ammunition at KAECHON. Heard from Co CO that many in the other Bn of the 336th Regt were not as fortunate and did not receive any shoes at all.

f. Personalities:
YEN (fnu) (言), Co CO.

g. Medical:
About 50% of the troops of 366th Regt suffered from either cold or frostbite. Most of the troops were weak from malnutrition caused by shortage of food and forced marches.
336th Regt received Tetanus shots 15 Oct 50 at MANCHURIA, and about a week before they entered KOREA. No other inoculations received.
