FIELD REPORT (IX CORPS LDI - 0249) 4 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: CHIN Yo Fu (金友福)(CCF)

OCCUPATION: Farmer
EDUCATION: Primary School 1 yr
DATE OF CAPTURE, PLACE: 031700 Feb 51 at (CE424352).

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative but information was vague and not very reliable. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Brief Chronology:
150th Div crossed the YALU River at SINUIJU Oct 50. Marching south as a body, 150th Div passed through SEOUL and crossed the HAN River over the ice 18 Jan 51. 19 Jan 51, fellow soldiers told him that they were E of SUWON. 22 Jan 51, Div arrived at an unknown hill. Upon arrival 448th and 449th Regt departed for an unknown destination while 450th Regt remained resting here. 26 Jan 51, 3 bn of 450th Regt departed the hill. 1st Bn marched during night of 26 Jan 51 in an unknown direction and arrived at an unknown hill at dawn 27 Jan 51. On the same night at the hill Bn contacted UN Forces and the engagement lasted until about dawn of 29 Jan 51. After dusk 29 Jan 51, PW Bn withdrew from the hill. 1 Feb 51, PW Co arrived near where he surrendered (CS 424352), after losing contact with the remainder of the Bn while retreating. The Co remained here until 031000 Feb 51, when it was attacked by enemy artillery. The Co scattered and retreated but PW remained behind and surrendered 031200 Jan 51.

b. Organization and Strength:
50th CCF Army composed of the 148th, 149th, and 150th Div. 150th Div composed of the 448th, 449th, and 450th Regt. Attached to the division were a security bn and a gun bn. Heard from fellow soldiers that a 92mm gun (nor known whether a mortar or arty piece) was used in the gun bn. 450th Regt had 3 rifle Bn, 82mm Mortar Co, and Security Co. Bn had 3 rifle Co and HMG Co and a Signal Plat. Each Co had 3 rifle platoons and a 60mm mortar sqd, and the rifle platoons were organized into 2 rifle sqd and 1 LMG Sqd. Approx 80 men in 3rd Co and 300 men in the 1st Bn.

c. Deployment of Other Units:
Heard from others that 38th Army was in the vicinity of the unknown hill, where the 450th Regt rested from 22 Jan to 26 Jan 51, that 39th Army was also in KOREA.

d. Status of Arms, Ammunition, Supply, and Equipment:
PW Co had 18 LMG (400 rd each), 3 HMG, 2x60mm Mortars (15 rd each), and model 38 rifles (90 rd each). (The 1st and 2nd Co in PW Bn all carried model 38 rifles and the 3rd Co all carried Chinese make rifles). Each man carried 4 grenades.
Mortar Co attached to 450th Regt had 2x82mm mortars.
To the knowledge of the PW, no new supply of arms or ammo or replacements of men were received by PW Co after entering KOREA.
Food was always obtained locally, and troops were fed once or twice daily with corn, millet, or unpolished rice.
No new supply of clothing was received by PW Co since entering KOREA, except for rubber soled canvas shoes which were received (26 Jan 51).

e. Personalities:
WANG Hong Ching (王洪稱), 24 or 25, CO, 3rd Co.

f. Medical:
Although practically all the men in PW Co were suffering from slight physical ailments, such as sore backs and legs (from fatigue), frost bites, malnutrition and colds, there were no serious illness or diseases of such degree as to render troops incapable of fighting.

g. Armor, Engineer, Artillery, Etc:
Observed no CCF tanks or arty pieces after entering KOREA.

h. Propaganda:
Prior to entering KOREA, PW was never informed that he would be going there to fight. Only told that US already invaded and occupied North KOREA, and CCF must fight to prevent them from invading CHINA.
2 Feb 51, secretly picked up a UN surrender leaflet and the idea of surrendering occurred to the PW, although PW feared surrender since his superiors had told him that UN troops executed all PW upon capture.
