FIELD REPORT (IX CORPS MISDI - 0298) 20 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
NAME: LEE Yong Tu (李榮斗)(NKA)

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW tried to be cooperative. It is believed that PW may know more about the composite organization, but until such time as he is medically treated, further interrogation is hardly possible. Recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
Conscripted 30 Jul 50 at CHONCH'ON, North KOREA into the NKA and the same day was sent to CHINNAMP'O for a month's basic training. After which, 3 Sep 50, assigned to II NK Corps 13th Div, 19th Regt, 2nd Bn, 2nd Co, 1st Plat, 2nd Sqd. The same day assigned to 19th Regt, departed for P'YONGYANG by rail and arrived the same day. O/a 6 Sep 50, Regt advanced further south on foot, arriving at HAENGSONG, around 25 Sep 50. O/a 29 Sep 50, upon hearing of UN Forces approaching them, Regt withdrew to the north, arriving at CHIAN, MANCHURIA around 10 Oct 50. During the latter part of Oct 50, PW 3rd Bn was formed with 500 CCF and 30 NKA troops. Whether this Bn was part of a larger organization was not known. PW was assigned to the Recon Plat of the Bn. Did not know the disposition of his original unit.
3rd Bn crossed into KOREA and headed southward, passing through NACHON, P'YONGYANG, SEOUL, and arrived in the vicinity of NORYANG-JIN (CS1954), around 6 Jan 51. O/a 10 Jan 51, Bn headed east along the HAN River, arriving at CHUUP-SAN (CS7549) around 23 Jan 51. Crossed HAN River 8 km SW of CHUUP-SAN, remaining at CHUUP-SAN for 20 days. Received orders to reconnoiter the area approx 8 km SW of CHUUP-SAN, and headed southwest. However, on 14 Feb 51, upon reaching the area concerned met UN forces while in a farmer's house and was told by them to leave the area immediately. After 2 days, PW left the point he met the UN forces, he was captured by ROK Security Police, 16 Feb 51.

b. Strength and Organization:
Present strength was approx 373 men (23 NKA and 350 CCF) from the original strength of 530 men (30 NKA and 500 CCF).
Strength was depleted due to frequent air raids and shellings while travelling along the HAN River.

c. Deployment of PW Own Unit:
3rd Bn was located in the vicinity of CHUUP-SAN, as of 14 Feb 51.

d. Deployment of Other Units:
PW observed approx 300 CCF troops on the mountains approx 3 km E of CHUUP-SAN. PW heard from one of his friends that approx 320 CCF troops were located approx 16 km E of CHUUP-SAN. PW friend learned of this from one of the patrols sent out from the group of 320 CCF troops.

e. Status of Arms, Ammo, Supply and Equipments:
PW observed the following weapons in his Bn as of 14 Feb 51:

f. Status of Food and Clothing:
Food obtained looted from the villagers or farmers.
No clothing resupply was seen in the Bn. Original issues of clothing were all they had.

g. Mission and Intention:
PW Recon Plat mission was to investigate the area of enemy disposition prior to Bn advancement.

h. Personalities:
KUM, Pong Hyun, 31 yr, Plat Ldr.

i. Physical Condition of Troops:
No unusual epidemics or sickness were observed in the Bn.

j. Psychological Warfare:
PW picked up safe conduct surrender leaflet 8 km SW of CHUUP-SAN as of 14 Feb 51. Could not read, so he threw it away where he picked it up.
