Captured while out to reconnoiter UN strength, location, and to get information concerning the civilian population in MAAM-NI.
1300 hr 4 Feb 51, left YONAE (DS2960) were 27th Regt (strength: 8,000) was dug in nearby hills.
3rd HW Plat (strength: 28) armed with 2 HMG (no ammo and out of commission), 2 mortars 82mm with 30 rd, 10 PPSH SMG with 130 rd ea, 2 M1 rifles with 30 rd ea, 1 carbine with 40 rd, and 40 hand grenades. One person out of each Plat was sent to different villages o/a 4 Feb 51 and was told to report of his findings; however, PW was told to stay at MAAM-NI for about a month.
1 Feb 51 his Co CO, Plat ldr and sqd ldr, after a meeting, told them that they were going to take a rest by withdrawing. Believed that the reason for withdrawal was the heavy casualties.
2 Feb 51, heard that 27th Regt CP was going to move from KAPCH’ON (DS2757) to SOKSA-RI (DS5565).
28 Jan 51 heard from 2 runners from Div Hqs that the Regt Hqs was located in same area as Div Hqs.
a. Food:
Food obtained from villages was insufficient. (2 meals per day).
b. Ammo Supply:
No ammo was received after crossing the 38th parallel.
c. Medical:
4 Feb 51, PW counted 10 typhoid cases in his Plat. They were evacuated to the rear.
d. Uniform:
About 50% of his Plat were in Civilian clothing due to the shortage of clothing. Remainder wore winter uniforms.
e. Morale:
Low, because of ammo shortage and heavy air raid.
