FIELD REPORT (2 DIV LDI 0136) 8 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative, information was limited because he was assigned to his unit for a short time.
Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. CIRCUMSTANCES OF CAPTURE:
Escaped from the NKA on 2400 hrs 6 Feb 51 at Mt 473 which is located 1 km north of PUNGSUWON (CS9554) and surrendered.

4. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology
o/a 9 Feb 51, source was captured by CCF at YONGWON (North Korea) where he observed approx 11,000 CCF troops all armed with Soviet rifles and PPsh SMGs, 100 horses and cattle loaded with ammo, 3 x 81 mm mortars, and rice. All were traveling southward. 10 Dec 50, source and 150 CCF arrived at MAENGSAN (North Korea). At that place was turned over to the NKA while the rest returned to YONGWON. Stayed there until 14 Dec 50 during which time he observed 200 ROK PW used as laborers. o/a 14 Dec 50, 80 NK officers came to MAENGSAN, and he was told by these officers that they came from MANPOJIN (near YALU River). Observed that 30 of these officers were armed with pistols while others carried PPshs SMGs or US.SMG M-3’s. o/a 14 Dec 50, these 80 officers, 200 NK troops, and 200 ROK prisoners left MAENGSAN and traveled south through PAEKSONG-Ni (NK), SINPYONG (NK) KOKSAN(NK), CHORWON(NK), KIMHWA(NK), CHICHON-NI (SK), CHUNCHON, and reaching the mountain located 4 km east of HONGCHON. o/a 13 Jan 51 to 3 Feb 51 while resting, 200 NK soldiers and 200 ROK prisoners received communist training from these same officers. Study hours were from 0600 to 1800 which were held in the mountains, 2000 to 2300 hours indoors. o/a 28 or 29 Jan 51, source and 20 men carried rice to V Corp Hq located 12 kms east of HONGCHONG. Vicinity of DS1472. Heard from a soldier that there were approx 200 NK soldiers at this V Corps Hq. Observed 1 CCF company (approx 150 men) resting in this area. On 5 Feb 51, 200 NK soldiers and 200 ROK prisoners arrived in vicinity of NAMMYON (CS975623), and were assigned to the 12th Div where he heard from an officer that the Div Hq was located at NAGODAE (DS0162). 3rd Bn consisted of HMG Co, Mortar Co and Rifle Co. Estimated strength of each company approx 80 men. The HMG Co weapons consist of 2 HMG, 10 PPsh SMGs, 5 US rifles and 15 Soviet rifles. Everyone carried 150 rds and 1 hand grenade. The mortar co had 2 81mm mortars, all troops of this company carried Soviet rifles. These 200 ROK prisoners received Soviet rifles (150 rds of ammo per) and 1 hand grenade each.

b. Supply
All troops of the 12th Div had on winter uniforms. Food was insufficient and only ate twice a day.

c. Medical
Observed at NAMMYON 7 to 8 cases of frostbite and most of the troops suffering from cold weather.

d. Morale
Morale of the troops was high for they believed that they will win the war.
