1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Separated from his unit during retreat from WONJU. Information mainly hearsay. Not reliable. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. CIRCUMSTANCES OF CAPTURE:
O/a 28 Jan 51 while the 6th Div was retreating from WONJU, PW became sick (couldn’t keep food down) and dropped behind. He stayed in a house for the last 10 days when he was captured.

4. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Intention:
18 Jan 51 a Liaison Team from the V Corps Hq brought orders for the 6th Div (estimated 7,000 men) to withdraw from WONJU to rest and prepare for a new general attack. 6th Div moved out that night. During their march, PW was told by a Sgt from the Liaison Team that the 6th Div was going back to V Corps Hq located 10 km E of HONGCHON. Also told by the Liaison Sgt that he attended a meeting held by the V Corps CG at SAMURAJE TOGE (between HOENGSONG and HONGCHON) of all Div CG under his command and they were told that the V Corps was to rest for 20 days; then work their way around the UN flanks; joining up with NKA troops already behind the lines; then hold a defensive position while the CCF made an all out frontal attack. He was also told by the Sgt that the V Corps CG was summoned by KIM, Il Song (President of NK) and he left for P’YONGYANG o/a 28 Jan 51.

b. Weapons:
(1st Regt) 1 82mm mortar to each Regt (200 rd), 4 HMG to each Bn, 3 LMG to each Co, 80% armed with Russian Rifles (80 rd each), PPSH SMG (200 rd each), Japanese rifles (50 rd each) and 20% unarmed.

c. Clothing:
Two-third winter uniforms. One-third summer uniforms.

d. Morale:
Low, because of insufficient food and promised air and Arty support; made, but never kept.

e. Physical Condition:
Weak, troops not able to sleep at night because of UN attacks and troop movements. In the daytime sleep interrupted by air attack.
