1130 hr 6 Feb 51 70 men of 7th Co of NKA were surrounded and PW and 19 men were captured.
a. Chronology:
O/a 22 Dec 50, 12th Div consisting of approx 6,000 men crossed 38th Parallel and passed through vic of CHUNGCHON and arrived 16 km N of WONJU o/a 7 Jan 51 where they engaged UN Forces and were defeated (half of strength destroyed in this battle). O/a 10 Jan 51 they retreated to NAM-MYON (vic CS9662). 3rd Bn consisting of 400 men was at NAM-MYON, SHINDAE-RI (CS9561). They were told to rest and wait for replacements at this vic until 20 Feb 51.
b. Assignment & Intention:
1 Feb 51 3rd Bn received 150 replacements from 38th Div. After receiving replacements, 3rd Bn received orders to set up a defensive line 16 km NE of HOENGSONG (DS1149).
4 Feb 51 8th Co, 9th Co and HMG Co were with 3rd Bn at a village (vic of DS2161) and 7th Co was on a hill (believed to be hill 600, vic DS2262), but they all retreated toward north after receiving heavy attack 1000 hr 6 Feb 51.
O/a 25 Jan 51 heard from his Bn CO that 12th Div Hq was located in SADONG, approx 28 km N of SHINDAE-RI.
As of 2 Feb 51, 2nd Regt of 12th Div was located at a village approx 2 km SW of SHINDAE-RI. There are approx 20 houses (1 large house, rice mill) in this village and personnel of Regt were staying in these houses during the hours of darkness and in trenches which were dug on slope of hill, approx 200 meters N of village.
c. Weapons:
Weapons of 2nd Regt: 15-20 x 82mm mortars (50 rd of ammo ea, 6-7 HMG (5 cases of ammo ea), 15-20 LMG (5-600 rd of ammo ea), SMG (Sqd Ldr and up (400 rd ea). All personnel had rifles with approx 250 rd of ammo ea. 1500 rd of rifle ammo were issued to each Bn 28 Jan 51, but no ammo resupply from NK. Above mentioned ammo was brought down from NK when the unit came down last year.
d. Supply:
There was a rumor that they are expecting ammo supply from NK in near future.
They only have 7 days food ration in hand, but the rice was obtained from villages. (2 meals per day) insufficient.
Everyone was issued cotton padded winter uniform and shoes on Nov 50.
e. Medical:
20% of 3rd Bn personnel are suffering from frostbite. Approx 20 men of 3rd Bn personnel are suffering from typhus, but no medicine for this disease.
