Cooperative, but information limited due to short period of military service.
Military History:Inducted 28 Jul 50 at SINUIJU (新義州) with 800 other men.
Trained 4 days at SINUIJU.
The 3rd Bn (800 men) departed SINUIJU 3 Aug 50 by rail - arrived YONGDONGP’O in the morning of ? Aug 50. Rested in a mountain until nightfall. (The 1st and 2nd Bn departed SINUIJU on the 2 Aug 50, one day before the 3rd Bn and were to meet at IMAM-NI Area).
Departed YONGDONGP’O D/U Aug - rail - arrived WONJU (原州) D/U Aug 50
Departed WONJU D/U Aug - marched - arrived CH’UNGJU (忠州) D/U Aug 50. No troop movement observed in CH’NGJU.
Departed CH’NGJU D/U Aug - marched - arrived YONGJU D/U Aug
No troops in YONGJU (榮州). No equipment observed. Departed YONGJU D/U Aug - marched - arrived IMAM-NI 22 Aug 50. Met the 1st Bn in IMAM-NI Area. The 1st and 3rd Bn took cover on a mountain. Before they could reach the top, they were shelled by mortar and arty. Morning of 23 Aug 50, PW heard somebody yell for them to surrender. PW immediately surrendered. PW saw many NKPA bodies. Heard that he was in the 73rd Ind Regt for the first time in the battle area.
Personalities:4th Plt ldr: CHONG YONG TAE, Jr Lt, age 22.
He mistreated his men. If someone was sick or wounded and could not keep up with the unit he would shoot him. He would kill anyone who disobeyed his orders. PW does not know whether this officer was captured or killed, but hopes he was killed. PW states that all the men in the unit hated this officer.
Weapons and Personnel:No knowledge of remaining weapons in unit. During the trip to IMAM-NI, PW saw about 50 x PPsh M1941 submachine guns in the 3rd Bn. 1 x MAXIM HMG M1910 in 3rd Co.
Vehicles:No vehicles in 3rd Bn,
Supplies:One rice ball daily. Food supplies by farmers during trip.
Capability of Unit:Morale: PW states that the morale of the entire unit was low because they were conscripted into the army and received no word from their families. Officers were harsh. No proper training. PW does not believe in war and wants to join the ROK army.
Airfields:One small airstrip in SINUIJU. Not being used. One big airfield in P’YONGYANG damaged by UN bombing. No aircraft observed.
