Informant was cooperative but unable to furnish much military information due to his youth and short period of military service. Informant considered reliable by interrogator.
Military History:27 Jun 50 - PW and family fled SEOUL before advancing NKPA.
26 Jul 50 - Arrived with refugees at HAMCH’ANG. At HAMCH’ANG 200 males (including PW) ages 16-37, average age 22, were conscripted into NKPA’s 1st Div. Issued M1891/30 rifles, 70 rounds, 1 x RG-42 hand grenade. No training received.
O/a 5 Aug 50 - 1st Div (1st, 2nd, 3rd Regts) engaged in battle with ROK Army units near UISONG (1160-1490). ROK Army withdrew. 1st Div entered UISONG. 2nd Regt, 2nd Bn (PW’s unit) original strength of 400 reduced to 50 after USONG engagement. Bn CO and 5th Co CO KIA at UISONG. 50 remaining from 2nd Regt, 2nd Bn joined by 50 from another unit that was separated from 2nd Regt.
O/a 17 Aug 50 - 2nd Bn (100 including PW) passed KUNWI. Engaged ROK Army units in mountain W of highway 5 km S of KUNUI (1150-1480) 2nd Regt, 1st and 3rd Bn’s (strength unknown) also engaged ROK Army units in same area.
18 2 300 Aug 50 - PW deserted unit (2nd Bn) during night. Surrendered to ROK Army patrol.
1st Div Hqs believed located in KUNWI Area. 1st Div, 1st Regt believed to be the leading unit of 1st Div composed of veteran soldiers including 1 battalion (strength 400) of Koreans formerly with the CCF.
