Evaluation:
PW was very cooperative but not very intelligent. Very unobservant disposition. Reliability good. PW wearing Peoples Army uniforms with green piping and striped which partially verifies his statements concerning security unit. PW has not seen or heard of any surrender leaflets. Has not heard of any regts of the 7th Div being detached.

13 Nov 49-26 Jun 50: P’YONGYANG Military Academy enrolled in rank of Sgt. Trng received: Sqd, plt and company tactics, political trng, dismounted drill, range practices (w/DP LMG-50 rds, PPsh M1941 submachine gun, 30 rds, MAXIM HMG: 50 rds, M1891/30: 200 rds), methods of camouflage, map and compass reading, Korean History, political Map studies and Russian history. Total enrollment on 26 Jun 50-7,000 cadets. 100-2nd Lts graduated on 26 Jun 50 while the remaining 6,900 cadets continued studying.

There were 50 instructors, name unknown, one Russian Sr Col advisor to commandant, name unknown, last observed 26 Jun 50. No indications that advisor was to leave. All cadets received oral examinations prior to enrollment - board of examiners consisted of six (6) officers. Questions asked included: Address, reasons for desiring attendance, reasons for being a solider, mathematics (division and multiplication), reading and giving brief summary of newspapers, etc. All cadets must be of followers “Democratic” ideology. Examination lasted 30 minutes.

Tactical Movements:
Upon graduation from Mil Acad 26 Jun 50, subject and two other Jr Lts were sent to SEOUL. Arrived SEOUL 3 Jul 50. Subject was assigned to 11th Bn, 2nd Regt, 7th Div (7th Div was a Security unit). The 11th Bn was organized in SEOUL 10 Jul 50, of 90 troops from P’YONGAN PUKTO and HAMGYOUNG PUKTO. No other units of 7th Division were present in SEOUL at that time. Locations of 7th Div unknown.
10 Jul 50 - 11th Bn departed SEOUL with orders to proceed to P’OHANG-DONG. Bn strength approx 900 men. Bn equipped with type 38 Jap rifle, US M-1 rifles, US carbines, American Browing 30 cal HMG’s, and Browning Automatic rifles. No mortars or guns. Travelled on foot. Bn equipped with 3 x ZIS-151 trucks and 3 x US 2½ ton trucks used to haul rations and ammunition. One truck load of ammunition.
14 Jul 50 - 11th Bn arrived WONJU. No contact made with any unit.
20 Jul 50 - Bn arrived TANYANG (丹陽). No contact made with any unit.
23 Jul 50 - Bn arrived YONGJU. No contact made with any unit.
30 Jul 50 - Bn arrived CH’ONGSONG via NAESONG (乃城). CHAESAN and YONGYAGN (英陽). No contact made with any unit.
16 Aug 50 - Bn arrived KIGYE. Enroute the Bn stopped at all villages to patrol area. On 16 Aug 50, made contact with cone NK Bn, identification unknown, which was retreating northward after an engagement w/SK forces. 11th Bn entered KIGYE 16 Aug and at 1400, 17 Aug 50, engaged SK forces on western outskirts of KIGYE (1210-1460). No other NK unit participated in engagement. No other NK unit known to be in area. Battle lasted until 17 1800 K Aug 50. 11th Bu suffered casualty of 250 men (50 killed, 200 wounded). Bn ordered to withdraw toward P’OHANG-DONG at 17 1800 K Aug. Wounded evacuated to 7th Div Hqs (hearsay) 24 km N of KIGYE.
18 Aug 50 - PW ordered to proceed to P’OHANG-DONG ahead of 11th Bn to reconnoiter the city. Bn was to arrive at city at 18 1600 K Aug 50. PW arrived city alone at 1500, 18 Aug and was immediately captured by ROK forces. Disposition of 11th Bn since then unknown. Disposition of other elements, if present in the area, is not known. No details of security Forces organization available.

Morale: Morale of unit was very high until after the 17 Aug 50 engagement at KIGYE. In the battle the unit suffered the loss of 250 men. Noticeable drop in morale when unit ordered to retreat. However, no cases of desertion.
Strength: Original strength 11th Bn 900 men, present strength approximately 700 men. No replacements
Ammunition Situation: On 18 Aug 50, each rifleman had an average of 50 rds. No other immediate supply available.
Equipment: 11th Bn very inadequately armed. Bn weapons are as follows: 4 x cal. 30 Browning HMG, 9 x BAR; US M-1 and carbines and 90 grenades.
Supply: No supply since leaving SEOUL. Food obtained from civilians.

Armor:
5 x T-34/85 tanks observed 20 Jul 50 at TANYANG. Tanks headed toward NAESONG. No infantry. No details.

Artillery:
No information.

Vehicles:
3 x ZIS-151 trucks and 3 x 2½ ton US trucks in 11th Bn. Trucks in good condition.

Strategic EEI
1. PW did not expect war on 25 Jun 50.
2. Believed eventually there would be war between N and S Korea.
3. There was no orientation of officers prior to dutset of war.
4. PW did not expect American intervention.
5. Subject did not expect US naval or air support.
6. Officers in private conversations expected US to sen armor and heavy artillery
7. Officers believed war with S KOREA would not last over 3 months. No other information.
