3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
1 July 50: With 30 fellow medical students, PW was attached to HAMHUNG (咸興) 8th Station Hospital as an interne, by orders from the local government office.
1 Aug 50: 8th Station Hospital moved to SINHUNG-GUN, approx 40 km N of HAMHUNG to avoid air raids by the UN air forces.
10 Aug 50: Released from internship. Inducted into the North Korea Army, and assigned to the 8th Station Hospital as a Lt.
11 Oct 50: 8th Station Hospital with all medical personnel, patients and medical equipment moved to HYESANJIN (惠山鎭) near the MANCHURIA - North KOREA border to avoid enemy attacks.
13 Oct 50: On the way to HYESANJIN (惠山鎭), PW deserted and returned to his home, SINHUNG.
20 Oct 50: Worked in SINHUNG Public Hospital as a doctor.
5 Dec 50: With his family, moved to HAMHUNG (咸興) as a refugee because the CCF arrived in the vicinity of SINHUNG.
11 Dec 50: Captured in HAMHUNG (咸興) by the ROK, because he did not have an identification card.

b. Unit Organization and Strength:
Organization Chart:
Designation numbers of Military Hospitals were three digits always preceded by number “9”. For instance; 965th Medical Unit in HAMHUNG (also called the 8th Army Station Hospital by people in the vicinity).
8th Army Station Hospital (965th Medical Unit) controlled all medical affairs concerning military personnel in the entire vicinity of HAMGYONG NAMDO (咸鏡南道). There were four other hospitals under the control of the 8th Army Station Hospital, taking care of wounded military personnel. These were known as:
HAMHUNG Medical University Hospital. Located in HAMHUNG. Capacity - 250.
HAMHUNG Railroad Hospital. Located in HAMHUNG. Capacity - 200.
HAMHUNG Civil Hospital. Located in HAMHUNG. Capacity - 100.
HUNGNAM (興南) Civil Hospital. Located in HUNGNAM. Completely destroyed in the latter part of July 50 by air raid. Capacity - 200.
The organization of the 965th Medical Unit (8th Station Hospital) with its strength.
Detachment Section consisted of three Sub-Sections, as below:
Secretary: One NCO; censorship of correspondence.
Statistic: One Lt (PW), statistics of patients (death, replacement, etc).
Personnel: Two Capts, one NCO; conducted personnel affairs.

c. Unit History:
The 8th Station Hospital was originally organized on or about 20 Jun 50, and it was designated as the 965th Medical Unit.

d. Personalities:
CH’OE, Yong Gon (崔唐健); rank: Lt Gen; Korean; Secretary of Defense; 38; ht: 1.9m; build: heavy; complexion: dark, round face; married; formerly served in USSR Army.
LEE, Tong Hwa (李東和); rank: Maj Gen; North Korea; Chief of Military Medical Bureau; CO of 548th Med Unit; 45; ht: 1.7m; wt: 55kg; slender; complexion: dark; round face; married.
Graduated from unidentified Japanese Medical University. Former minister of the Ministry of Public Health and Sanitation. On or about 25 Jun 50, he was assigned as CO of 548th Med Unit.
LEE, Pong Su (李鳳洙); rank: Lt Col; North Korean; also had USSR citizenship; CO of the 965th Medical Unit; 55; ht: 1.6m; wt: 45kg; slim; complexion: dark (reddish); characteristics: long face, bald; 4 children (one still in USSR attending Univ of MOSCOW); last seen: In HAMHUNG Medical University; date: 9 Oct 50.
When he was in his teens, he moved to USSR with father. Graduated from an unidentified Russian Medical School. During World War II, he served in the USSR Army. In 1946 returned to North KOREA and was Chief of the Communist Party in HWANGHAE-DO (黃海道) for about a year. Former chief of Medical Bureau before June 50.
LEE, Yu Ho (李有浩); rank: Maj; North Korean; Chief of Treatment Section of the 965th Med Unit; 35; ht: 1.75m; wt: 45kg; slim; complexion: light; long face, glasses; 3 children; last seen: HAMHUNG Medical University; 11 oct 50.
Graduated from Seoul Medical College and KYUSHU Medical University in Japan in 1943. He was vice president of HAMHUNG Provincial Hospital. Feb 48, visited MOSCOW for official inspection tour. On or about 1 Aug 50, assigned to present position.
SO, T’aek Yong (■澤龍); rank: Maj; North Korean; Chief of Political Section; 35; ht: 1.65m; wt: 50kg; slender; complexion: dark; characteristics: long face, low voice; married; last seen: HAMHUNG Medical University; 11 Oct 50.
Education; 6 yrs of Primary School. Served in the CCF. Attended Military Academy at PYONGYANG in 1945.
NICH Lae (phonetic) (fnu); Soviet citizen; advisor; 31; ht: 1.8m; wt: 65kg; build: heavy; complexion: light; glasses, round face; marital status: unk; last seen: 8th Station Hospital in HUNGNAM (興南); 5 Oct 50.
Came to KOREA in Jan 49 as a Medical advisor with six others (including 3 females) and was assigned to 8th Station Hospital.
FUNDOS (phonetic) (fnu) (female); Soviet citizen; advisor; 23; ht: 1.6m; wt: 56kg; build: slim; complexion: reddish; good looking, blond hair; widow, one child; last seen: HUNGNAM (興南), 8th Station Hospital; 5 Oct 50.
Graduated from an unknown Medical University in USSR. Came to KROEA with other Russian advisors in Jan 49.
CHE, Myong Hak (斉明鶴); North Korean; former president of HAMHUNG Medical University; 55; ht: 1.9m wt: 70kg; build: heavy, fat; complexion: dark; characteristics: sometimes wore glasses, round face, handsome; 3 children; last seen: HAMHUNG Medical Univ; Feb 50.
Graduated from Seoul Severance Medical College and from Kyoto Medical University. Major occupation, surgery. As of 1948, received honor as a doctor of medicine from North Korean Gov’t. In Feb 50, he was transferred to P’YONGYANG Medical University as president.

As of 6 Sep 50, due to greatly increased number of patients, HAMHUNG Senior High School and HAMHUNG Girls College were occupied by the 8th Station Hospital for hospitalization of patients.
Capacity - Approx 800 each.

h. Morale:
Morale was low. They always feared air attack by B-29s.

i. Replacements:
No replacements.

j. Evacuation and Treatment of Wounded:
An average of 500 patients were received monthly from the front. 20 to 25 patients died of wounds every month. Cases requiring major surgery were sent to HAMHUNG Medical University. Patients were also evacuated from HAMHUNG to the North vicinities by rail as of Oct 50.

k. Supply:
Medical equipment and supplies were received from the Military Medical Bureau (548th Medical Unit).
Food was supplied by the Food Bureau of the local government Office.
Trains and trucks were used to transport all materials. The 8th Station Hospital area was always guarded by an unidentified Military unit with strength of approx 100. There was a great shortage in supply; especially medicine.
On or about 1 Aug 50, 30,000 bottles (200,000 units each) of Penicillin, which were believed to have been captured in SEOUL in Jul 50, were distributed to the 8th Station Hospital.
