a. Because of the lack of gas masks, the troops were instructed to use wet towels, and if need be, to urinate on the towel and cover the mouth and nose.
b. To avoid low places and if possible, climb to high ground.
c. Each soldier was instructed to carry garlic with him, and if gas was detected to immediately eat two pieces of it. Each piece is about the size of a man’s thumb.

Breakdown of PW’s 9th Co:
Total 140 men

10 men CCF troops
All CCF men were either Sqd or Plat leaders.
Also all officers were CCF men.
If there were someone within the group of former CNA troops who had the courage to lead them in deserting their units and cross over to UN Forces, the majority of the men would desert and follow. The idea of fighting against their former friends does not appeal to them. PW states that while in CHINA, there was no future for them if they did desert, so in order to eat and live they had no choice but to follow orders and perform their duties as best as possible.
