FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS FWD #1 - 0284) 31 December 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

UNIT: 572 Unit (Regt, 3rd Bn)
EDUCATION: Primary school 6 yrs
OCCUPATION: Truck Driver
PLACE OF CAPTURE: CHUNGJU
DATE OF CAPTURE: 23 Dec 50.
PLACE OF BIRTH: PYONGANG PUKTO, SINUIJU SHI, MILYOK TONG, #272 (平安北道 新義州市 ■■洞 #二七二)

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW deserted his unit on 28 Sep 50 at MOKP’O, when his unit was ordered to retreat. Surrendered voluntarily on 23 Dec 50 to UN Forces.
Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
4 Jul 50: Conscripted into army, and sent to CHINNAMP’O for one month of military basic training.
7 Aug 50: Completed training and was ordered to assemble at P’YONGYANG, and was assigned to the 572 Regt, 3rd Bn as a truck driver.
10 Aug 50: 572nd Regt was ordered to the critical regions in the south.
21 Sep 50: Arrived intact in MOKP’O and for a week PW repaired his truck.
28 Sep 50: Morning. Unit was ordered to retreat to CHUNCHON. PW and 6 others deserted unit, and fled north intending to go home.
23 Dec 50: After approx 3 months of traveling in the mountains (only during night) PW and 6 others surrendered voluntarily after they learned from villagers that PsW were treated well at prison camps and that they would never be in danger.

The 572nd Regt was comprised of 3 Bns. 3rd Bn (approx 1,000 men) had 3 Rifle Cos.
Last known Composition of Unit: (As of 25 Sep 50)
At MOKP’O 3rd Bn had 217 men during above period, after their continuous battle.

Equipment: (572nd Regt as of Aug 50)
6 x 45mm Antitank gun, 13 x HMGs, 3 Russian trucks.
Each man carried 3 hand grenades. There were approx 100 x 45mm shells.
Due to oncoming UN Forces, equipment mentioned above, have either been destroyed by his own troops or captured by UN Forces.

4. MORALE:
Did you see UN leaflets or hear loudspeaker broadcast? Answer: Yes.
What did the leaflet say and look like? The leaflet said that “If you raise your hands high and surrender to the UN Forces now, your life will be spared and you will be able to go home to be together once again with your friends and family.
What was the effect on you? Answer: Upon seeing the leaflet, at first PW was doubtful of whether that was true or not, however, after he was told by the villagers about the consequence, PW realized that instead of living a life of danger in the mountains, it would be safer in the prison.
