PW was not very intelligent and not overly cooperative. Reliability - Fair
Chronology:
Feb 46: Joined CNA at YINGKOW (營口), MANCHURIA and attached to 71st Army, 88th Corps, 264th Div 3rd Regt under Army Gen CHIN, Min In (■■■■■).
Apr 47: Captured by CCF near CHANGCHUN. PW and 5,000 others from the 71st Army were sent to TSITSIHAR where they were educated politically. Some military training was conducted also. The training camp was located in the outskirts of and west of TSITSIHAR City, former site of the Jap army camp.
Oct 47: Attached to 39th Army (present unit) as medical aid man. Unit was located near CHANGCHUN.
Nov 48: Unit participated in capture of MUKDEN.
Feb 49: Participated in capture of TLENTSIN.
Nov 49: Unit marched through HONAN, HUP’EH, HUNAN, KWEICH’ON Provinces and reached KWANGSI Province. Unit then pulled back to KANKOW.
Feb 50: Entrained from HANKOW and reached YU HSIEN (■縣) in HONAN Province, where unit (348 Regt) engaged in farming and rested.
Jul 50: Entrained at HONAN Province and traveled to MANCHURIA, HAICHENG-HSIEN (■■縣) stopping briefly at MUKDEN. Unit engaged in training. Farmer’s homes were used as quarters.
22 Oct 50: 348th Regt marched across railroad bridge at SINUIJU under cover of darkness. Unit marched southward but route taken unknown. All travel at night. Unit fought in UNSAN Area.
Date Unknown: TAEDONG River (frozen over) was crossed on foot unknown distance E of P’YONGYANG at night. Unit received no air attacks at night.
O/a 17 Dec 50: 348th Regt arrived IMJIN River at KORANGPO’RI. Village area where the unit dug in to await reinforcement.
24 Dec 50: When the Regt withdrew northward into the hills PW was not notified and PW, along with 7 or 8 others, were captured while resting. PW was captured in the afternoon.

39th Army - Composed of 115th, 116th, & 117th Divs.
116th Div - Composed of 346th, 347th, & 348th Regts.
348th Regt - Composed of 3 Bns, 1 Heavy Mortar Bn.
1st Bn - Composed of 3 Cos and 1 HMG Co.

Above losses occurred mostly in UNSAN (雲山) area against US Forces. No new replacements came to this unit after they reached KOREA. No other fighting was done by this unit.
Equipment:
1st Bn - 3 water cooled HMG, 3 Jap HMG, 3 US “Bazookas,” 9 LMG (one per Plat), “38” Jap rifles, and US carbines.
Losses of the above equipment unknown.
5 Heavy mortars were attached to Regt. Japanese field artillery pieces were in Div. No ammo issued after the drive south was started.
Communications:
Telephones were used between Bns and Cos. Wireless sets were in Regt’l Hq but uses unknown.
Food:
Taken from the local village.
Intentions:
To await further reinforcement and begin another drive south.
Other Units:
The whole 39th Army, 115th, 116th, and 117th Divs entered KOREA.
Personalities:
PAN, Sun Min (潘順民), Former 1st Bn CO (died at UNSAN), age - 25.
UN PsW:
PW saw approx 30 US PsW who were sent to 116th Div Hq from his unit. They were captured just south of UNSAN (雲山), date unknown.
No UN PsW were captured or seen by PW after the December drive was started.
Psychological Warfare:
Did you surrender? No.
Did you see any UN leaflets or hear any loudspeaker broadcasts? Yes, at UNSAN.
What did the leaflets look like or what did the loudspeaker say? PW heard UN broadcasts in Chinese at UNSAN but it was not very clear due to the noise of the airplanes. The leaflet said that the PW would receive fair treatment if they would surrender.
What was the effect on you? PW felt no special reaction though he believed the leaflet. No others surrendered to PW’s knowledge. Officers were always on alert for those contemplating desertion.
