2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was physically fit and of average intelligence. Information was given freely, reliability considered fair.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
Apr 46: Inducted into CNA and attached to 71st Army Arty Regt.
Jun 47: Captured by CCF at SSUPING-CHIEH and attached to the 39th Army. Unit marched southward through MANCHURIA, into TIENTSIN and marched through central CHINA into KWANGSI-SHENG.
Jul 50: Boarded train at HONAN-SHENG HSIN CHONG-TSAN (河南省新鄭站) where the 39th Army had been resting and farming for 4 months. Unit (348th Regt) arrived at HAICHENG, MANCHURIA. Unit took battle training.
22 Oct 50: Crossed YALU River at SINUIJU. Marched eastward towards UNSAN, traveling for one week.
29 Oct 50: 1st Bn engaged in battle at UNSAN, receiving heavy losses. PW transported the wounded and buried the dead here. UN troops were buried separately from the Chinese troops. No markings were made over the dead.
During the general offensive southward, PW was in spear-heading element of the 348th Regt.
20 Dec 50: Reached KORANGPO-RI
24 Dec 50: Captured

Unit Organization:
14th Army Group - Composed of 3 Armies including 39th Army.
39th Army - Composed of 115th, 116th, and 117th Divs.
116th Div - Composed of 346th, 347th, and 348th regts
1st Bn - Composed of 3 x Cos.

2nd Co received about 30 men from other companies to boost up the Co after the 29 Oct 50 battle at UNSAN. It was believed that Bns also evened its troops strength within the Regt at this time.

Equipment:
2nd Co, 1st Bn (as of 24 Dec 50)
30 Jap “38” Rifles (80 rds ea); 6 Canadian LMGs (600 rds ea); 2 x 60mm (US) Mortars with square base plate (35 shells ea); 4 M1 carbines (US), automatic (100 rds ea); 4 M1 Rifle (100 rds ea); 4 “Greaseguns” (40 rds ea); 12 Demolition bombs (2 inch in diameter x 1 yd long rod packed with charge - Jap); 90 grenades (usually 3 per rifleman).
No shortage of ammo was experienced by the company. US equipment picked up in the field was used.
All ammo and equipment had to be gotten from Bn. No extra ammo, other than which were carried with the individual weapons were kept at company supply. Company did not have any extra weapons other than those carried by the men.
4 HMGs were in Bn and sent to company as needed.
3 Bazookas in Regt Arty
76mm Mountain Guns (Jap) pulled by horses in Regt’l and divisional level.
US made Howitzers, pulled by trucks, were controlled by the Field Army.
Above weapons were brought into KOREA with the 39th Army and were seen at UNSAN Area - number unknown.
Unknown calibre AA Guns were brought to KOREA by the field army. PW saw four fighters shot down by these AA Guns at UNSAN.

Personalities:
CHEN, Ming Jen (陳明仁), age - 40, became governor of HUNAN-SHENG (hearsay). Former Duty - Army CG, 71st Army (CNA) in MANCHURIA, later CNA I Corps (100th, 103rd Army) CG in HUNAN-SHENG which gave up to CCF intact. Became governor of HUNAN-SHENG after the CCF took over the area in Jul 49.
KAU, KO (高克), age - 33, 348th Regt CO, took over unit in 1949.
WANG, Yang (王陽), 116th Div CG, took over as CG Jul 50.
WU, Shin Chuen (吳信全), 39th Army CG, became CG Mar 50. Was assistant CG until then.
LIU, Chun (劉農), 14th Army Group CG, became CG Mar 50. Was acting CG of the 14th Army Group until then.
HSU, Yul Jen (徐祐仁), age - 37, Commander of 1st Bn, 348th Regt. He was with this unit a long time.

4. GENERAL INFORMATION:
Air Information:
PW first saw swept-back wing planes in Jul 50 at HAICHENG (海城), MANCHURIA flying south. Groups of 3 to 6 planes were seen. PW heard that 6,000 to 7,000 airplanes, of unknown type are in MANCHURIA.

Tactics Against Armor:
Only antitank weapon which the company had was a demolition bomb of Jap make, 2 inch in diameter x 1 yd long which had a fuse and timed to go off in 3 to 5 minutes. Two tanks were blown up in UNSAN area, by their company who waited by the side of the road until they rumbled by before scrambling on it and tossing the “bomb” down the hatch.
US “Bazookas” were used but controlled by Regt. Instructions were to fire at the tanks from the rear. Vulnerable points were the bottom and tracks.
PW heard of an antitank gun in Div which fires six shells at once.

Opinions of PW:
What do you think about the UN air force?
Answer: PW and all members of the CCF fear the air attacks.
What do you think about the UN Army?
Answer: PW does not know what the UN army means but does not have any fear of the US ground forces. Great respect is held for the air power and Arty however. S Koreans make better fighters than the Americans. There are no greater fighters than the CCF unit.
What is your best weapon?
Answer: LMG and HMG (US)
Reason for entering KOREA?
Answer: Protect MANCHURIA from foreigners.

Answer: PW heard an airplane broadcasting something at UNSAN but could not make it out due to the noise of the airplane.
