PW was not too intelligent and information was almost nil. Reliability - fair.
Chronology:
22 Sep 1950: PW volunteered into NKA when they invaded CHONGJU area. UN offensive began immediately and PW and a band of men retreated through SEOUL, CHORWON, SUAN, PYONGYANG, SUNCHON, HUICHON, and into KANGGYE as ordered. Approximately 300 men, all S. Korean volunteers were in this group.
O/a 10 Nov 50: Group reached KANGGYE but found it deserted and went to CH’OSAN (楚山), where PW was drafted into 8th Division. PW received 15 days training.
1 Dec 1950: 1st Regt received sudden orders to march south. Unit passed through UNSAN, SINANJU, PYONGYANG, SARIWON, reaching SANWUL-RI (one night past SARIWON).
O/a 17 Dec 50: Unit took two days rest when they reached SANWULRI.
25 Dec 1950: Unit rested 12 km N of KAESONG for three or four days before marching southward again. When unit marched within 3 km of IMJIN River, unit stopped here for 3 days.
29 Dec 1950: PW and one platoon ran into ROK Troops while attempting to cross IMJIN River near PAJU. Platoon was spearheading the Regt’s drive south.

8th Rifle Div - Composed of 3 Regts (1st, 2nd and 3rd).
1st Regt - Composed of 3 Bns.
1st Bn - Composed of 3 Cos.
2nd Co - Composed of 3 Plats.
3rd Plat - Composed of 3 Sqds.

PW was in the first group (Plat) of 1st Regt trying to cross the river and does not know what happened to the rest of his unit after the 29th of December.
1st Regt is composed partially of S Koreans, like PW, who had no experience whatsoever and their fighting capability was not considered high.
Equipment:
2nd Co, 1st Regt, 8th Div - 50 Russian carbines, 9 PPsh SMGs (40 rds pe), 2 LMGs (Russian), no heavier weapons.
Disposition (29 Dec 1950):
1st Regt was located approx 3 km N of the IMJIN River; in a small village 1000 m south of the double tracked RR tracks which ran to KAESONG from SEOUL.
Other Units:
PW believes that the entire 8th Div followed the Regt.
PW first saw CCF forces in P’YONGYANG area. A company of 200 men were seen here.
Armored:
PW saw no tanks or trucks.
