2. ASSESSMENT:
PW could not read or write. He could not speak any Japanese and seemed to be of low intelligence. PW did not talk freely and was unable to recall dates or directions.
PW's rank of Jr Sgt and Duty of asst squad leader was temporary. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
18 Aug 50 - Inducted in NPKA, HOERYONG (會寧). Departed by train with 200 men.
25 Aug 50 - Arrived SARIWON via HAMHUNG and P'YONGYANG. 98th Ind Regt was unable to entrain due to air raids.
5 Sep 50 - Departed by train with the 595 Unit (approx 800 men). Arrived at point 12 km N of TAEJON, 15 Sep 50.
23 Sep 50 - Arrived 6 km N of KOCH'ANG (居昌) via KUMCH'ON (金泉).
24 Sep 50 - Captured by US forces while in farm house with 6 men. Remainder of the 800 men of the 98th Independent Regt were in the same village. Present disposition unknown.

Unit Organization and Strength:
The 98th Regt was organized at SARIWON on 25 Aug 50, as a replacement unit. The Regt (800 men) consisted of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd Bns and a rear supply platoon. A battalion (250 men) consisted of two companies of 100 to 150 men each. No casualties in 98th Regt as of 23 Sep 50.

Equipment:
No equipment in unit. Only officers had pistols.

Communication:
RR was utilized as far as point 12 km N of TAEJON as of 15 Sep 50. Shuttle system was used as bridges were destroyed. The condition of TAEJON-KUMCH'ON and KUMCH'ON-KOCH'ANG roads was fair. Bridges were destroyed but repaired by the village people. Packed stone fords were observed.

Intentions:
The 98th Regt was to reinforce a unit (designation u/k) at KOCH'ANG. No set day. Personnel of the 98th Regt were ordered to stick together as a unit and all movements were to be made with the Regt.

Morale and Propaganda:
Majority of the 98th Regt personnel were drafted farmers. Morale was quite high as the men all thought they would win the war within a short period and be able to return to their farms for harvesting. However, the personnel of Regt did not have any arms and were quite concerned. PW read a UN propaganda leaflet after capture but was unable to understand the leaflet as he could not read.

4. GENERAL INFORMATION:
PW had not heard about the INCH'ON Landing made prior to his capture.
SARIWON was heavily damaged by aircraft bombardment. The textile mill located 1 km SW of RR station, the RR station and police station were destroyed.
PW was not member of the MINCHONG (民靑) Communist Youth Organization. PW stated that a test was required to join this organization.
