2. ASSESSMENT:
PW appeared to be intelligent, but not too observant. In spite of his rank, information on NKPA seemed to be lacking. He seemed to lack interest in military matters. Not recommended for further interrogation.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
Chronology:
2 Aug 48 - Inducted into the NKPA at WONSAN. Received no basic training. Worked as a medical aide man. Promoted to Sgt.
o/a 15 Dec 48 - Arrived HAMHUNG. Assigned as a medic to the 7th RR Security Brigade.
o/a 15 Aug 49 - Transferred to CHANGP’UNG. Promoted to M/Sgt.
o/a 28 Apr 50 - Arrived KUMCH'ON (金川). Promoted to Jr Lt and became CO of the Medical Aidemen. Still assigned to the 7th RR Security Brigade.
o/a 20 Jun 50 - PW’s 7th RR Security Brigade assembled near the 38° Parallel SW of KUMCH'ON (金川)
o/a 30 Jun 50 - Arrived CHANGDAN (長湍). PW was transferred to the 9th Div.
o/a 5 Jul 50 - 9th Div arrived SEOUL and was stationed here as a Security unit until about 25 Aug 50.
o/a 25 Aug 50 - Departed SEOUL on foot. PW was several days in the rear of the main elements of the Division. The Div marched via SUWON, P’YONGTAEK, TAEJON, MUJU, KOCH'ANG, and HYOPCH’ON to SINBAN-NI (新反里).
o/a 10 Sep 50 - Arrived SINBAN-NI. When PW arrived, the 9th Div was reassembling after being pushed back across the NAKTONG River. PW could not estimate the strength of the Division, but he believed that it was considerably below the original strength. No replacements or equipment was received at SINBAN-Ni. PW was promoted to Lt.
o/a 18 Sep 50 - Counterattacked across the NAKTONG and advanced about 7 km E of river. The 1st Bn had about 50 men left at this point.
o/a 20 Sep 50 - Retreated across the NAKTONG River and was to regroup in TAEJON; however, when the 2nd Regt reached KOCH’ANG, orders were changed to KUMCH’ON (金泉) which was then under UN attack.
o/a 23 Sep 50 - The 2nd Regt arrived in KUMCH’ON. The 1st Regt was already defending KUMCH’ON. The 2nd Bn of the 2nd Regt took position 3 km SSE of KUMCH’ON. The 2nd Bn's strength at that time was 40 men.
25 Sep 50 - From here PW led his medical platoon to a point 1 km NW of KUMCH ‘ON and surrendered with Safe Conduct Leaflets to US troops who were advancing toward KUMCH'ON from the north.
At the time of PW’s capture, the 1st and 2nd Regts were to the E of KUMCH'ON. PW did not know the whereabouts of the 3rd Regt. He had not heard of the 3rd Regt since he left SEOUL.

Unit Strength and Organization:
PW estimated the original strength of the 2nd Bn to be 700, but as of 25 Sep 50, the strength was 40.

Equipment:
2nd Bn originally had 2 x 45-mm AT Guns and an unknown number of 82-mm Mortars. As of 25 Sep 50, the Bn had no 45-mm AT Guns and 2 x 82-mm Mortars, but no ammunition.
PW believed the 3rd Bn the 2nd Regt had 80 men as of 25 Sep 50, and estimated the other Bns in the 1st and 2nd Regt to be between 40 and 80 men.

Communication:
Roads: As of 25 Sep 50, the roads from KUMCH’ON to TAEJON was still passable; however, UN troops had the KUMCH'ON SANGJU road blocked.

Intention:
The original objective of the 9th Div was to cut the PUSAN-T’AEGU supply route by occupying MIRYANG, but after being repulsed twice, was ordered to regroup at TAEJON. Enroute to TAEJON, the Div was deployed for the defense of KUMCH’ON.

Morale and Propaganda:
Morale was low due to lack of food, ammunition and a high casualty rate.
PW had seen most of the UN propaganda leaflets and had faith in them. He led his men to surrender carrying Safe Conduct Leaflets.

Medical Information:
The Medical Plt was composed of 8 aideman. First aid was given injured troops and then the wounded were sent by litters to the Regt’l Medical Co where there was a medical officer who determined the extent of the injury. Seriously wounded personnel were then taken to the field hospital attached to the Division.
Majority of wounds were from artillery shell fragments. Diarrhea and other internal illnesses were rare.
All medical aidemen were Red Cross arm bands and were armed with rifles.

4. GENERAL INFORMATION:
PW stated that he once tried to escape to S. KOREA but was caught and tried. He said he was persecuted throughout his civilian life in N. KOREA.
