FIELD REPORT (521 - MISDI - 0487) 24 February 1951

2. ASSESSMENT:
Talked freely but made a few contradictory statements.
Reliability - fair.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Night Attack:
13 Feb 50, after sunset, plat and sqd ldr of 8th Co reported to Co CO (presumed to be a briefing by Co CO). One hour later, each soldier in Bn received 8 1b of rice in bags, and left Bn bivouac area, marching single file on one side of a two-lane road for 12 km. On the way, Co CO told the troops that agents dispatched by Div Hq had discovered a US position 2 km N of CHIPYONG and that they were on their way to conduct a night attack.
Company arrived at assembly point 400 m from objective at 2400 hours, with 7th and 9th Co following. Did not encounter any arty or machinegun fire on the way. At the assembly area troops turned their jackets inside out and tied white towels around their left arm. Troops were told one clap of the hands from the platoon leader (relayed back by sqd ldr) meant halt, two - advance, and three - withdraw.
0100 hr 14 Feb 51, company deployed from assembly are with 1st Plat on left flank, 3d Plat in center and 2d Plat on right flank, with 100 m interval between platoons.
The 3 sqd in each plat moved in three columns, 3 to 4 paces apart, crawling on hands and knees. Forbidden to talk or smoke and told to freeze in case flares were dropped.
When 1st Plat reached 300 m from objective, the left flank sqd charged single file at sound of bungle, with the other two sqd following. 7th Sqd, 3d Plat, 50 m in rear of leading sqd of 1st Plat when charge began. 2d Plat immediately followed 1st Plat and charged in same manner. Due to heavy UN MG fire 3d Plat did not follow 2d Plat as planned, but remained 50m , to rear of the line of departure. After 15 minutes, 3d Plat was hit by hand grenades, and only 10 retreated to rear, PW was wounded by fragments, hid in a drain, and entered a house.
30 minutes after first charge, 9th Co attacked in the same manner, followed by 7th Co one hour later.
No arty support. Observed no flares. No scouts preceded the advance platoons. The Plat ldr led the three sqd at the head of the fight, with the sqd ldr led the three sqd at the head of the fight, with the sqd ldr at the head of their respective sqd. No markings to indicate leaders. Co CO stayed in rear of rear platoons. 20 horses were scattered, with 50 m interval, 500 - 600 m rear of assembly point, with a man to each horse.
Strength: 8th Co - 3 plat, 70-80 men. Plat - 3 sqd (5-7 men ea). Two in each sqd armed with US M-1 SMG, 300-400 rd. One LMG in each sqd two 60mm mortars (30-40 rd ea) in each co.
Casualties: 8th Co lost almost all of 1st and 2d Plat due to heavy MG fire. 10 managed to escape from 3d Plat, which was pinned down 50 m behind the line of departure.

b. Night Bombing:
Encountered night bombing inn vic of CHIPYONG NI 11 Feb 51. 12 WIA and 6 KIA in Co. 3 trucks destroyed by napalm bombs, and were very effectively demoralized by troops. No countermeasures taken during raid. Each individual acted on his own.
Encountered no shelling.
