FIELD REPORT (521 MISDI 0521) 12 March 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: LEE, Yon Sop
RANK: Capt
DUTY: Asst Bn Comdr (Political Officer)
UNIT: II Corps, 2d Div, 4th Regt, 1st Bn (NKA)
DATE & PLACE OF CAPTURE: 28 Feb 51, MAPYON-NI (DS 607587)
CAPTURING UNIT: 7th ROK Div

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW ill for a long time and appeared weak and dazed. Tried to be cooperative but admitted that his memory was poor information limited due to being in the mountains all the time. Answered direct questions only. Reliability is fair.

3. CIRCUMSTANCES OF CAPTURE:
Stricken with high fever and stayed behind in the village of MAPYON-NI when Regt was retreating towards HAJINGBU (DS 6165). Captured 28 Feb 51 by ROK troops while sleeping in a home.

4. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
20 Oct 46 - Volunteered for NKA at PYONGYANG.
Oct 47 - Appointed Jr Lt after graduating from Political indoctrination School at PYONGYANG. Assigned to 2d Div.
Jan 48 - Promoted to Lt.
Apr 48 - Promoted to Capt.
Feb 49 - Promoted to Sr Capt.
Jul-Oct 50 - 2d Div moved to TAEGU, then retreated N.
Early Nov 50 - 2d Div reorganized at KARYOJU (CT 2692).
Nov 50 - 2d Div departed KARYOJU and moved S through mountain paths near YANGGU (DT 1218), CHUNCHON (CS 8993), HONGCHON (DS 0372), HOENGSONG (DS 1149), TAEHWA MYON, PYONGCHANG (DS 4535).
15-20 Jan 51- Arrived YONGWOL and ordered to retreat N to PYONGCHANG, TAEHWA.
Early Feb 51 - Arrived KAECHON, then went to CHINJORI, back to KAECHON and them to TAEHWA.
15 Feb 51 - PYONGCHANG. 4th Regt separated from div and retreated N.
18 Feb 51 - Arrived CHONGSON (DS 7136)
20 Feb 51 - PW stayed behind at MAPYON-NI, while regt headed towards HAJINGBU (DS 6165).

b. Personnel:

Original strength - 470-480 (70-80 stragglers from other units picked up on may S.)
Strength 20 Feb 51 - 250
Breakdown of casualties - 50% sick, 10% WIA, 30% frostbite, 10% air attack any arty.

c. Weapons and Ammunition (20 Feb 51):
1st Bn 4 x 82mm mortars, 2-10 rd each
2 x 60mm mortars, 7-8 rd each
8-9 HMG, 1,000-1,500 rd each
12-13 LMG, 500-800rd each
50-60 PPSH SMG, 200-300 rd each
200-250 US M-1 and carbines, 50-60 rd each(picked up on way S).

e. Replacement:
Feb 51 at KAECH’ON, 50 soldiers, formerly with 38th Div, joined 1st Battalion.

f. Supply (Feb 51 at KAECH’ON):
Received winter clothing and pair of canvas or leather shoes and 200 rd of ammo per PPSH SMG. No resupply of ammo for other weapons.

g. Psychological Warfare:
Observed safe conduct and surrender leaflets but was uninfluenced. Leaflets may influence a few, but majority of troops need not be told why they are fighting because they have seen and experienced the loss of parents, brothers, sisters, friends, and homes. Political officers only tell troops not to believe leaflets.
