FIELD REPORT (IX CORPS MISDI 0340) 10 March 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

PLACE AND DATE OF SURRENDER: Surrendered at (CS665596), 081600 Mar 51, to “B” Co, 19th RCT.
OCCUPATION: Employee at Textile Mill
EDUCATION: Primary School 5 yr

2. ASSESSMENT:
Cooperative and willingly gave information. Comparatively observant and information seems fairly reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Organization and Strength (present):
Engineer Hq, 4th Field Army composed of 8 engineer regiments, from 1st to 8th. 8th Regt composed of 1st, 2d and 3d Engr Bn, Guard Company, Truck Co, Medical Unit, and Communication Co. Original strength of the 8th Engr Regt was approx 1400 men and is presently estimated at 1300 men.
3d Engr Bn composed of the 7th, 8th, and 9th Co, Communication Sqd, and Tool Supply Sqd. Present strength of the 3d Bn approx 350 men; originally about 380.
9th Co composed of 3 platoons and the strength of the company was approx 120 men as of 8 Mar 51.
3d Plat composed of 3 sqd and the strength of the platoons was 33 men as of 8 Mar 51.
Heard from his Co commander at the time of entry in KOREA that the 3d and 4th Engr Regt were also to enter KOREA.

b. Deployment of PW Own Unit:
Heard that the Engr Hq, 4th Field Army was in HANKOU, CHINA at the time of PW entry in KOREA. PW company was at a hill (CS677619) until morning of 8 Mar 51.

c. Deployment of Other Units:
338th Regt Hq of the 38th Army was in the village at (CS684615) on the morning of 6 Mar 51; PW insisted that he was sure about the Hq location, because during the night his company slept in the same village. 377th Regt Hq was at village (CS646606) o/a 4 Mar 51.
8th Co of 337th Regt was deployed on the hill (CS665596) till 8 Mar 51, however, the company retreated due to UN attack and PW company was sent to recapture the above hill. After 2 hr of fighting PW Co also withdrew. PW did not see or hear of any unit of 338th Regt beside the CP.
38th, 39th, and 50th Armies are already in KOREA. 38th and 50th Armies were observed by him. Saw elements of the 50th Army 16 km E of SEOUL o/a 26 Feb 51.

d. Status of Arms, Ammo-Supply, Equipment:
PW Co possessed the following arms, ammo, and equipment at present.

e. Status of Food and Clothing:
PW unit did not receive any food and clothing supplies since they came to KOREA.
Usually, food was obtained from villages and was plentiful.

f. Chronology:
PW volunteered into CNA in 48 and later became Sqd Ldr. In Jan 49 he was captured by CCF. In Mar 49 he was assigned to Engr Bn, 48th Army and reassigned to the present unit in Jul 49.
In late Dec 50, the regiment crossed the YALU River by train via ANTUNG, MANCHURIA and they got off at CHONGJU, KOREA, where the 3d Bn was separated from regiment and proceeded south. At SUKCHON PW company further separated from the battalion and travelled southward, arriving 5 km N of SEOUL o/a 18 Feb 51, via PYONGYANG, HWANGJU, SARIWON, NAMCHON, PYONGSAN, NAMPO, KUMCHON, YONGHON, and KORANGPORI. O/a 26 Feb 51, the company was ordered to proceed to 377th Regt positions, where they dug foxholes for the regiment’s 2d and 3d Bn, near YANGPYONG. 5 Mar 51, the company moved to a village at (CS684615). They were digging air-raid shelter at hill (CS677619) until 8 Mar 51, when they received order to relieve the 8th Co, 3d Bn, 337th Regt which was then at (CS635593). However, PW company was thrown back by heavy UN attack after the 8th Co had retreated. PW Co was dispersed as a result of the fighting. PW took this chance to surrender, hiding at the foot of the hill until everything had quieted down. At about 1400 hr he climbed up the gill to meet the 19th RCT, to which he surrendered.

g. Mission and Intention:
Mission of PW company was to dig foxholes for combat soldiers. Original mission was to repair road and bridges at the rear, however, his company was sent to the 337th Regt to dig foxholes for combat men since 26 Feb 51.

i. Physical Condition of Troops:
There was no known epidemic or other sickness, except colds. Their health was comparatively good, as they did not suffer from cold weather too much because they always slept in houses.

j. Engineer Units:
Although PW was a member of an engineer unit, he did not have any knowledge of engineering. 8th Engr Regt was equipped roughly with following:
16 trucks (8 were heard to be destroyed)
20 horse carts
The trucks were to transport their food. However, he did not see them for about one month and did not know for what purpose they were being used. One horse cart was assigned to each company and its function was to transport food where trucks could not pass. PW did not seem them since early Feb 51. There was no machinery of any type.
Each company was equipped roughly with the following:
Axes 35
Picks 35
Saws 16
Shovels 70
They constructed 3 by-passes for broken bridges at SUKCHON, YONGCHON and IMJIN River. These by-passes were constructed at the shallowest spot in the river, by making dirt roads wide enough to allow one truck to pass.

k. Psychological Warfare:
PW road surrender leaflets on two occasions recently and he believed that the majority of his company also read them. All the man of low ranks and non-communists seemed to be willing to surrender after reading the leaflets. However, it was difficult to find an opportunity to desert under the watchful eyes of company commander, political leader, as well as communists.
