2. ASSESMENT:
Cooperative but his poor physical condition made it difficult for him to answer questions clearly.
Information seems to be reliable.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
Conscripted into North Korean Ind 8th Regt, received no training, and left SEOUL for KAKYOJU RI (CT 2691) on foot 28 Sep 50, via following places:

Approximately 400 men in 8th Regt remained approximately one week at KARYOJU-RI. Here, 8th Regt received 600 replacements from 6th Division.
8th Regt with approx 1,000 troops left KARYOJU Nov 50.
While passing through XUMAL-LI (CS 8577), redesignated as 6th Regt of 2d Division Nov 50.
Until it reached YUTONG-RI (CS 7199), Dec 50, 6th Regt, 2d Div was engaged several times with US and ROK forces and suffered approx 20% casualties.
While travelling from YUTONG-RI to SANGYOUNG-RI, following places were passed:

PW fell behind his Division at YONGSAN-RI 9 Dec 50 due to frozen feet.
10 Jan 51, rejoined North Korean Straggler-Collection Company of V Corps at KARAEGOL (DS 2069).
17 Jan 51, was assigned as a runner in 2d Bn, 6th Regt, 2d Div, II Corps at BAEKUNTONG (phonetic).
13 Feb 51, 6th Regt personnel were replaced into 4th Regt, 2d Div at 4 km North PYONGCHANG (DS 4735), and troops of 6th Regt, 31st Div (which had been deactivated) placed into 2d Div as 6th Regt, 2d Div, II Corps.
Until mid-Feb 51, II Corps Hq was at BAEKUNTONG 15 Feb 51, the 2d Div was engaged with ROK forces for 4 hours at CHANG-RI (DS 5633).
17 Feb 51, 2d Div retreated to SUKUTONG, where PW was captured 28 Feb 51.

b. Location and Activities of Units: (as of 28 Feb 51)
2d Div CP and 2d Div personnel were at SUTONG RI (CS8995) where they maintained defensive positions. PW heard from one NK soldier from 2d Div, Recon Co, that 2d Div was to retreat to YUTONG-RI (CS 7199) 28 Feb 51, and that area was supposed to be a collecting area.

c. T/O & E and Strength: (as of 28 Feb 51)
Heard from his Bn CO that NKA had 8 Corps. PW knew of only 3 Corps (2d, 3d and 5th).
II Corps: 4 Divisions (2d, 9th, 10th and 27th), 33d Indep Rifle Regt, 2 Field Hospitals (10th, 11th), Signal Bn, Recon Bn, Transportation Bn, Propaganda Section, Intendance Plat, MP Section and Rear Hq.
2d Div: 4th, 17th and 6th Rifle Regiments, Arty Regt, Signal Bn, Recon Co (Code: KKOEKKORI), Rear Medical Section and units.
4th Regt: 1st, 2nd and 3rd Rifle Battalions, Arty Bn, Recon Co, Signal Co, and Rear Medical Section.
2d Bn: 3 Rifle Companies 4th (Code No: 40), 5th (Code No: 50), and 6th (Code No: 60), 82mm Mortar Co (Code No: 80), Intendance Plat and Signal Platoon.
Each Rifle Co: 3 Platoons, and Supply Squad.
Each Rifle Plat: 3 Squads with approx 4 men to each sqd.

There were no losses due to desertions and sickness. There were a few cases of influenza. However, estimated combat casualties of 2d Bn were approximately 15%. 2d Div had adequate equipment and ammo.

e. Food, Ammo and Other Supplies
Food was obtained from people in occupied places by confiscation. 2d Div received ammo supply at TUN AE (DS 3148) Feb 51. It was SMG ammo which was issued at approx 700 rd per SMG.

f. Armor, Artillery and Aircraft:
Observed an estimated CCF Division at KARAEGOL 12 Feb 51. Feb 51, heard from a staff officer of V Corps that 1 CCF Div was directly controlled under the NK Corps.

g. Signal:
Telephones and wireless were used between Corps and Divisions. During battle, wireless was used between Division and Regiment. Between Regiment and Battalion telephones and runners were employed.

h. Morale and Battle Effectiveness:
Morale was low in 2d Bn, 4th Regt because of continual marching. 2d Bn troops have lost the will to fight.

i. UN PW:
Observed approx 100 ROK PW in 2d Bn area at CHANG-TI (DS 5633) 15 Feb 51.
Dec 51, saw approx 30 US PW in 6th Regt area at ANHUNG (DS 0063).
NKA treated US and ROK PW well.
All UN PW were controlled by NK Department of Political Defense.

j. Psychological Warfare:
PW surrendered because he disliked communism.
Saw a UN leaflet once which urged him to surrender with promises of humane treatment.
Most NK troops did not believe the leaflets.
