Primary Mission:
The primary mission of the Engr Bn assigned to Div (see inclosure 1) is to insure the safe and speedy passage of combat units over or around natural or man-made obstacles. The Bn operations are under the complete control of the Chief of Engineers (Div Staff). In defensive operations, the Bn is responsible for the location and placement of obstacles, the destruction of bridges, and the laying of mine fields.

Equipment:
The equipment of engineer units is crude and short in supply. Hand tools, dynamite and box mines constitute the entire issue of equipment. Building material utilized in construction are procured from nearest local source, Personnel of engineer units are armed mainly with Russian made 7.62mm rifles. One LMG is believed to be furnished per squad. Transportation consists of 5 or 6 trucks (4 ton Russian made) and one ton for Bn CO.

Operations:
The Engr Plat (25-30) men, assigned to Regt, performs same functions as Bn, on a smaller scale. A Capt on regt staff controls operations of this Plat, which is commanded by a 1st Lt.

Maps:
The procurement and distribution of maps in the NK Army is not the responsibility of engineer units. The map officer, division staff, has, as his sole function, the responsibility.
Engr troops, at the beginning of campaign were well-trained, efficient troops. However, as campaign progressed replacements furnished to these organizations were of inferior quality and the effectiveness of the engineer units diminished greatly. The greatest defeat noted in Engineer troops was the inexperience and lack of “know-how” in expediting river crossings.
