2. ASSESSMENT:
Intelligent, cooperative. Reliability - Good.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
12 Dec 50: Inducted at place of birth into II Corps, 9th Div, 2nd Regt, NKA, as cook.
15 Dec 50: Moved to YONCH’ON(連川).
1 Jan 51: Crossed 38th Parallel through mountains by way of HWACH’ON(華川).
15 Jan 51: Arrived YONGWOL(寧越).
21 Jan 51: 12 km south of YONGWOL(寧越), PW deserted.
24 Jan 51: Surrendered to a ROK unit.

As of 21 Jan 51 2nd Regt had lost 30 men from frostbite. 3 men had come down with typhus.
Equipment of 2nd Regt:
(1) 60mm mortars: 3 60mm mortars per mortar Co (American made) with 6 shells. Intention was to get shells from UN Forces.
(2) HMG: About 5 in HMG Co.
(3) 7.62mm LMG: 8 per regiment.
About one third of the men didn’t carry rifles. Ten of fifteen rifles in each Co were useless because of rust. Unit had no bore cleaners or oil.

d. Communication:
2nd Regt Two field phones in Regt CP (Russian made).

e. Disposition:
As of 21 Jan 51 9th Div was 10 km east of YONGWOL(寧越) with 1st and 2nd Regt in line and 3rd Regt in reserve, 12 km to rear.

f. Intentions:
9th Div was to proceed to PUSAN.

g. Morale:
Two thirds of the troops were old soldiers. One third were recruits. Old men were very eager to fight for their own safety because they had been in NKA too long to be converted, but the morale of recruits was very low.

h. Supply:
Half of the men carried three days ration. The other half lived off the land. Each man carried 30 rounds of ammunition for rifles. Mortar shells were carried by the men.

I. UN PW:
PW saw about 90 ROK PW at 2nd Regt (9th Div) between 10 Jan 51 and 21 Jan 51 at the YONGWOL perimeter(寧越).
Guard Plat, a part of 2nd Regt, controlled PW.
Never heard of mistreatment or killings. Two ROK PW were killed in bombing by UN Air Forces.

j. Medical:
As of 21 Jan 51 about 30 men had dropped behind their unit, chiefly because of frostbite. Three of them were supposed to have had typhus. These three men dropped behind on 18 Jan 51 and PW saw them at KANGWONDO, NOKCHON-NI(江原道 碌田里) 8 km southeast of YONGWOL(寧越) 19 Jan 51. They slept at a farmer’s house. Symptoms of these men were:
High degree of fever
Talking in sleep
Sweat
Red face
Urine excessively yellow
Men very thin
Groaning in sleep.
PW was at the head of the column and did not subsequently see any sick, but presumes that there may have been other cases in the regt.
