PW cooperative and sincere but lacked detailed information. Reliability seems good.
a. Chronology:
6 Oct 50 - 27 Oct 50 - Conscripted into the NKA 47th div at SINUIJU(新義州). 47th Div composed of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd Inf Regt and one unk Arty Regt.
27 Oct 50 - 47th departed SINUIJU marching to P'YONGAN PUKTO, SINSAN-NI(新山里). Div underwent several air attacks on the way. No casualties.
11 Nov 50 - Div received Russian weapons. Arty Regt inadequately equipped. Inf Regt fully equipped with M1938 carbines.
11 Nov 50 - 15 Jan 51 - Div went to INCH'ON via T'AECH'ON(泰川), P'YONGYANG(平壤), SARIWON(沙里院), KAESONG(開成) and SEOUL.
26 Jan 51 - PW Plat attacked by ROK marines. 4 members of PW Plat Killed. PW wounded and captured along with one other member of PW Plat.
b. Unit Organization and Strength:
PW could not ascertain the exact strength of 47th Div but except for losses suffered in the skirmish of 26 Jan 51 the unit strength was intact and estimated at approx 10,000 men for the 47th Div as of 26 Jan 51.
c. Unit History:
The 47th Div is believed to be a recently activated Div as about 5,000 men were conscripted into it at SINUIJU 8 Oct 50.
Unit composed of 3 Inf Regt, one Arty Regt (only 3 Russian 76mm M1902/30 guns seen by PW), Supply Bn, Signal Bn, Medical Bn, Replacement Bn, Engineer Bn, Antitank Co, Political Unit and others.
The 47th Div is believed to be a recently activated Div as about 5,000 men were conscripted into it at SINUIJU 8 Oct 50.
d. Communications:
Bn and below used field phones for communication. Regt and Div unk.
e. Disposition:
As of 26 Jan 51, two Bn of the 3rd Inf Regt guarded and were stationed in the city of INCH’ON. Div Hg and other units of the Div were located approx 6-7km N of INCH’ON.
PW observed several Arty pieces on a hill situated in the center of town. Arty Regt possibly located here. PW also heard there were Arty pieces situated on the island of WOLMIDO (月尾島). One unit of unknown strength, not exceeding 1 Bn, was not attached to the 47th Div. 3 Rifle Plat from PW own Co were disposed in INCH’ON (see sketch). Two Btry from Arty Regt of Div were also believed located at INCH’ON.
f. Intention:
Units in INCHON were for guarding the town only.
g. Morale:
Low. Lack of Air and Arty support. Lack of modern weapons.
(Superiors said they had the weapons but the men never saw then.)
h. Supply:
Food was confiscated from warehouses in town and taken to unk location. Rice was distributed daily. Each man carried 250-300 rd ammo for small arms.
i. Pay of Personnel:
Pvt - 50 won/month. Pay of other personnel unk.
