2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was very cooperative and seems to possess a very alert mind. Info seems very reliable.

3. T/O & E AND STRENGTH:
II Corps: 2nd, 9th, 10th, 27th and 31st Div.
9th Div: 3 Rifle Regt, Engr Co, Recon Co, Sig Bn, Arty Bn, Security Co, and Med Unit.
3rd Regt: 3 Rifle Bn, Recon Plat, Security plat, HMG Plat, Engr Plat, Sig Plat, Med Unit and 1 Rear Svc Co.
Rear Svc Co: 3 Plat.


4. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OR UNITS:
Mission of 9th Div was to sever roads behind UN Lines at CHECH’ON (DS3010), TANYANG (DR3987) and YONGJU (DR6775) areas but 9th Div was said to have failed to accomplish its mission.
O/a 29 Jan 51, CO of 3rd Regt, 9th Div told PW that 9th Div and all NKA Units will rest until end of Feb 51. New arms, ammo, food and clothing will be brought to the Regt from the rear. 3rd Regt will rest at SOUN NI (DS285358). 9th Div Hq will also remain at SOUN NI. Regiments of 9th Div will remain within TUNNAE MYON (DS3252).
2 Feb 51, PW observed 9th Div Hq at SOUN NI and the II Corps Hq at YUDONG NI (DS2559).
4 Feb 51, PW observed 2nd Div Div Hq loc UNGYO RI (DS3742) and the 27th Div Hq at SANGBANG NUM (DS487424).
4 Feb 51, PW observed Regt of 27th Div loc on high ground running from south to east of PAE GIL DONG (DS5544).
051700 1 Feb 51, 3rd Regt, 9th Div departed HAANMI RI (DS5144) to proceed to SOUN NI (DS285358).

5. PERSONAL AND UNIT HISTORY:
Conscripted into NKA 10 Oct 48 at HUNGNAM (CV8210) and was assigned to 2nd Div. After receiving 3 mo basic training with training unit of 2nd Division PW was assigned to 1st Regiment, 2nd Division loc at HUNGNAM.
May 50, 2nd Div arr at CHORWON (CT4335).
23 Jun 50, 2nd Div arr in CHANGPYONG (DT2621)
From 25 Jun 50, 2nd Div attacked south through KORANGPO RI (CT1107)
O/a 30 Jun 50, approx 20km South of KORANGPO RI, PW became ill and was hospitalized until end of Jul 50.
PW was ordered to report to the 2nd Div upon recuperation.
PW walked south to TAEJON (CR5921), arriving o/a 13 Sep 50. After arriving at TAEJON, PW was told that NKA was retreating, so he fled north through the SOBAEK Mountain Range (小白山脈); INJE (DT2713), CHANGDO (CT8463), PYONGGANG (CT5153) to HUPYONG NI (CT3876), arriving at HUPYONG NI 3 Dec 50.
Disorganized NKA troops fleeing north were gathered at HUPYONG NI during period 3 Dec 50 to 10 Dec 50 and an Ind Bn was organized.
Indep Bn dep HUPYONG NI 10 Dec 50 arr TUNNAE MYON (DS3359) o/a 16 Jan 51.
O/a 16 Jan 51, troops of Indep Bn were assigned to various units of 9th Division at TUNGNAE MYON.
O/a 19 Jan 51, 9th Div dep TUNGNAE MYON and marched via ANHUNG MYON (DS2644) and PYONGCHANG (DS4735) to YONGWOL (DS5314), arriving at YONGWOL o/a 23 Jan 51.
O/a 24 Jan 51, 9th Div dep YONGWOL and marched through PYONGCHANG and ANHUNG DONG to TUNGNAE MYON, arr at TUNGNAE MYON o/a 30 Jan 51.
1 Feb 51, 3rd Regt, 9th Div departed from TUNGNAE MYON and marched to UNGYO RI (DS3742).
3 Feb 51, the 3rd Regt, 9th Div departed UNGYO RI and marched through SANGANMI RI (DS4846), arriving there on 4 Feb 51.
051700 I Feb 51, 3rd Regt, 9th Div SANGANMI RI to go to TUNGNAE MYON.
On 051700 I Feb 51, Rear Service Company, 3rd Regt 9th Div dep SANGANMI RI for YONGNANG NI (DS285446) to pick up food at YONGNANG NI and go to TUNGNAE MYON.
PW and one other deserted while enroute to YONGRYANG RI the night of 5 Feb 51 and surrendered to ROKA 27th Regt troops at HAANHUNG NI (DS2641) 060400 1 Feb 51.

7. FOOD, AMMO AND OTHER SUPPLIES:
Food was obtained locally. Rice, potatoes, millet, wheat and corn were obtained at the seat of the MYON (面). Food grown in each MYON was gathered at the seat of the MYON for use by NKA Units.
No ammo received from the rear. Troops picked up ammo wherever any could be found.

8. SIGNAL:
Telephones were used at Bn and higher echelons.
One telephone available to each battalion of 9th Div.
Runners were used at all echelons.
Pass words used by 9th Div were changed at 2400 hours every day.
Counter signs were used.

9. MORALE:
Morale of the 9th Div troops was fairly low due to the shortage of ammo, weapons and proper clothing.
High casualties suffered by NKA Units in all engagements was also a factor.

10. MEDICAL:
Approx 10% of 9th Div troops were suffering from an unk malady (symptoms; high fever following by chills, aching of joints, vomiting, inability to eat for 2 to 3 days). Those afflicted were seized with above symptoms every 10 days.
Approx 4% of 9th Div troops were suffering from frost bitten feet. No treatment was available.

11. PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE:
a. Did you surrender voluntarily?
a. Yes, PW surrendered voluntarily.
b. Did you see any UN leaflets or hear UN loudspeaker broadcasts?
a. Yes.
c. Can you describe what they said?
a. It urged the NK troops to surrender. It also asked, “What and for whom are you fighting?”
d. What was your reaction to them?
a. PW was influenced and surrendered.
e. Did you hear other soldiers discuss leaflets or broadcasts?
a. No.
