3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
28 Jul 50: Inducted into NK “Volunteer” Corps as a private in SEOUL and next day moved to CHOCH’IWON(鳥致院) via CH’ONAN(天安), by jeep.
13 Aug 50: Arrived KYONGSANG NAMDO, HAMYANG(慶尙南道 咸陽) on foot, via TAEJON(大田). At this time PW unit was designated the 104th Guard Regt which was a part of the North Korean Guard Headquarters.
2 Sep 50: Moved to KYONGSANG NAMDO, KOSONG(慶尙南道 固城) by jeep.
14 Sep 50: Moved to KYONGSANG NAMDO, SAMCH’ON P’O(慶尙南道 三千浦) by jeep. After a week PW unit started to retreat.
15 Sep 50: Arrived KYONGSANG NAMDO, SACH’ON(慶尙南道 泗川) on foot. PW unit was disbanded and on the way home, PW was apprehended by the North Koreans. Re-inducted into the 4th Regt, 2nd Div, at KYONGSANG PUKTO, MUNGYONG(慶尙北道 聞慶). 2nd Div strength at this time was about 2,000.
13 Nov 50: Arrived P’YONGAN PUKTO, KANGGYE(平安北道 江界) along the mountains, on foot. The 2nd Div was reorganized and re-equipped with ammunition for rifles and winter clothing. Division received about 1,000 recruit replacements. Total strength 3,000 men.
13 Jan 51: Arrived in an area just north of TANYANG(丹陽). 2nd Div was ordered to occupy this city but failed. Returned to CH’UNGCH’ONG PUKTO, YONGCH’UN(忠淸北道 永春). PW dropped behind his unit because of frostbite of toe.
23 Jan 51: Captured by ROK Army at YONGCH’UN(永春).

b. Organization of Regt and Equipment:
82mm SANITATION
82mm Mortar - 1 in each Mort Co, a total of 10 in the 2nd Div.
Rocket Launcher - 3 or 4 (American made) in the PW Bn, 82mm Mort Co. 5 shells per rocket launcher.
7.62mm HMG - About 1 in each Bn, 10 in the 2nd Div.
7.62mm LMG - 1 in each Inf Co.
7.62mm SMG - A third of the troops carried it.
Antitank Hand Grenade - Russian made, 1 in each squad. Usually squad leader carried it.
Hand Grenades - 2 or 3 per man.

d. Unit History:
II Corps consisted of the 2nd, 6th, 9th, 31st and 10th Div. 2nd Div was reorganized at KANGGYE(江界).

e. Personalities:
CH’OE, Hyong(崔廣)(최광), Lt Gen(中將), over 50, II Corps CG. He was formerly with 8th Route Army in MANCHURIA. Prior to the war he was commander of the 38th Parallel Guard Hq. Later CG, 2nd Div.
LEE, Ho(李虎)(이호), Maj Gen(少將), about 33, CG, 2nd Div. He was formerly with the 8th Route Army in MANCHURIA. Was CO of the 4th Regt, 2nd Div before he became CG, of the 2nd Div at KANGGYE(江界) in Nov 50.

g. Disposition:
When last observed 18 Jan 51, 2nd Div was headed for YONGWOL(寧越) from YONGCH’UN(永春), 4th Regt at head of column and 6th Regt last.

h. Intentions:
In Dec 51, the Corps chief of staff made a speech to all officers about the corps intentions. PW was informed of the speech by his Co CO. The contents of that speech are as follows:
We are going to distribute our corps from PUSAN northward along the mountains, to disrupt the enemy’s positions and to cut the supply routes when we start to attack the UN Forces. If you capture any ■…■, ROK and other UN personnel, send them back to their unit after taking their equipment. If this policy is followed, UN troops will be more willing to surrender knowing that their lives will be spared. Then we can get more ammo from them. You must remember that the CCP sent many CNA troops home alive, after getting their arms. This time, we will have many aircraft and tanks, therefore, the II Corps will be able to penetrate into the PUSAN perimeter without much fighting. This is the intention of II Corps.“

i. Morale:
Low - Because of the extreme cold. A third of 2nd Div troops were forstbitten.

j. Supply:
Each men carried 2 days rations and 300 - 400 rd. Mortar shells were carried in knapsack.
