a. Evaluation: PW was very cooperative and information received seems to be reliable.
b. Not recommended for further interrogation.
a. Unit Organization:
27th Div composed of 30th?, 31st? and 32nd Regt. Each Regt strength approx 500. A Mortar Co and HMG Co were attached to each Bn.
PW was previously in the 38th Div, 3rd Regt, 1st Bn, 1st Co, 1st Plat, prior to being assigned 27th Div.
PW heard that 38th Div was deactivated at KUNSAN-MYON (approx 20 Km Northeast of HOENGSONG) during the early part of Jan because unit was under strength.
105 men went to 27th Div and one Bn of men went to 6th Div.
b. Intentions:
Bn CO told the men that their objective was ANDONG but that they were going to rest for a month before they started on their mission. Their orders were to infiltrate UN lines and attack the UN Forces from the rear while the CCF attacked the forward position. The route to be taken, as told by the Bn CO, was to go through PYONGCHANG CHUCHON-MYON, CHE CHON then on to ANDONG. The unit’s orders were to avoid contact with UN Forces as much as possible.
PW believes that 27th Div still in HONGCHONG.
c. Weapons:
Wpn in 32nd Regt, 2nd Bn were: 3 mortars, 30 rd ea; 4 HMG (GS) 6 magazines ea; 1 M-1 rifle US per sqd (100 rd ea); 1 PPSH SMG per sqd (500 rd ea); 8 Russian rifles per sqd (100 rd ea). Each Bn had 1 field phone. Every Bn in Regt had same weapons as above.
d. Clothing:
Every man in 27th Div wore winter clothing. Some of the men wore US made overcoats.
e. Medical:
About 70 men in PW Bn was suffering from frost-bite.
The men had only 2 meals a day and they complained about it because it wasn’t enough.
f. Morale:
PW said the men in 27th Div were very confident of victory and their morale was high.
