PW appeared in good physical condition and wore fairly warm clothing. He talked fairly and was cooperative.

PW last observed CP of 449th Regt at KASAN NI (CS3988) 30 Jan 51. The Mortar Company had its position set up on a hill approx 5 Km East of the 449th CP.
PW heard from his superior officer that the 50th Army's mission was to defend the SUWON area at all costs. It was to delay the UN Forces so as to give the 39th, 40th and the 66th Armies, (these had suffered heavy casualties) enough time to regroup in the SEOUL area.
31 Jan 51, UN forces were approx 4 Km from the 449th Regt position; UN guns fired at the position but it was inaccurate.
PW conscripted into the CNA Oct 45 at CHANGCHUN (長春). PW advanced to the grade of Sergeant and was given the responsibility of an ass't squad leader after 2 years.
In Feb 48, PW was captured by the CCF at YINGKOU (瑩口). On the following day, PW was taken to LAOTU KOU (老頭溝), arriving 15 days later. Here, PW assigned to the CCF 150th Div, 449th Regt, Regimental Mortar Company, as sqd ldr of the 2d Plat, 3d Sqd.
For 3 months, PW underwent trainings and received communist indoctrination. After this schooling was over. PW was put to work on a farm.
Oct 49, PW departed west with 150th Div by rail, arriving at HONAN SHENG (河南省) after 7 days of travel. The 150th Div, detrained here and recuperated for approx 1 month. O/a 1 Dec 48, PW departed with 150th Div west arriving at HUPEI SHENG (湖北省) after a month of walking. The 150th Div was to mop up elements of the CNA remaining between HUPEI SHENG and SSUCHUAN (四川省). 1 Apr 49, the 150th Div arrived at SSUCHUAN and continued its mopping up operation in this area.
O/a 1 Oct 49, PW departed with 150th Div west, arriving in the vic CHUNGCHING (西■) after marching for approx 15 days. The following day it headed back to the SSUCHUAN area, arriving at CHIEN YANG (■陽) after 15 days of marching.
The 150th Div recuperated in this area for about one month and then marched to SHINGMIEN HSIEN (荊門縣) arriving there one month later. Here PW was promoted to ass't plat ldr and worked on a farm. 1 Sep 50, PW departed with 150th Div by tail and arrived at HAILUNG (海龍) 4 days later.
O/a 27 Sep 50, PW departed with 150th Div by rail and arrived at ANTUNG (安東) 3 days later. This unit set up defensive positions along the YALU River. 10 Nov 50, the 150th Div was ordered to cross the YALU River, and during that night. it crossed the border. 150th Div arrived at SINUIJU (XE1839) the following night. Traveling only at night over mountain trails, the div used the following route:

O/a 29 Jan 51, 150th Div arrived KASAN RI (CS3988). 449th Regt, 150th Div was ordered to defend this area at all costs, and other units of the 150th Div moved to an area North of KASAN Rl.
31 Jan 51, after supervising the transportation of supplies (food) to the units defending KASAN RI, PW deserted and voluntarily surrendered to the US 5th Cav Regt.

Three days supply of food was received prior to crossing the YALU River. After this supply was gone, the supply officer obtained food from farmers with procurement slips. There was a sufficient amount of food before arriving at KASAN NI on 29 Jan 51. However, since KASAN NI is not a farming area, there was no food left 31 Jan 51.
The 449th Regiment had received no ammo in KOREA. Troops had no new issue of clothing since crossing the border.
Telephones were used in all units of the 449th Regt. Flares and bugles were also used but PW does not know the significance of flares and bugle calls because he was only a supply officer.
Morale was low because of insufficient amounts of food and clothing.
1O. MEDICAL:
There were a few cases of frost bite and frozen feet. These patients were put on stretchers and removed to rear areas.
a. Did you surrender voluntarily? If so, why?
a. PW surrendered voluntarily because he was a farmer CNA soldier and had no desire to fight.
b. Did you see any UN leaflets or hear UN loudspeaker broadcasts?
a. Yes.
c. Can you describe what they said?
a. The leaflets informed him to surrender immediately saying that he would not be killed but would receive excellent treatment and good food.
d. What was your reaction to them?
a. PW surrendered the following day after reading the leaflet.
e. Did you hear other soldiers discuss leaflets or broadcasts? What did they say or do?
a. Negative.
