Information seems reliable. After seeing a safe conduct pass he deserted his unit.
T/O & E AND STRENGTH OF: 1st Co, 2nd Bn, 849th Regt, 105th Div
849th Regt composed of one (1) Arty Bn and one (1) Engr Bn. Arty Bn composed of three (3) Arty Co’s, Signal Plat, Recon Plat, Repair Plat, Ammo-carrier Plat, and Intendance Plat.
LOCATION & ACTIVITIES OF UNITS:849th Regt CP was located on a mountain approx 6 km N of YANG MOK (若木) at time of his desertion on 21 Sep 50.
FW believes that all other units of the 849th Regt were located at same place.
PERSONAL & UNIT HISTORY:Inducted 19 Jul 50 at PYONGYANG.
Received 2 hours of artillery training when 2nd Bn arrived on a mountain approx 12 kms of PYONGYANG on 6 Aug 50.
849th Regt departed PYONGYANG on 6 Aug 50 by truck.
PW stated that the 2nd Bn separated from the 849th Regt at MIRIN when the Bn departed on 9 Aug 50.
To avoid air attacks they hid in tunnels during the day while traveling on train from MIRIN to YONGJU.
The Bn arrived on a mountain approx 8 km N of YANGMOK (若木) on 7 Sep 50.
After picking up leaflets on 7 Sep 50, PW with 8 others deserted 1st Co, located approx 300 m W of POKSONG DONG on 210700 K Sep 50, and surrendered to US troops at YANG MOK (若木).
