FIELD REPORT (ADVATIS - 0911) 26 September 1950

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was uncooperative and frequently made contradictory statements during course of interrogation. PW stated that he was not a Communist. Reliability of PW is questionable. Further interrogation not recommended.

3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology :
14 Jul 49 - Inducted into NKPA at P’YONGYANG. Assigned to 10th RR Security Bridge. After three days training, 12th Bn departed by train.
17 Jul 49 - Arrived WONSAN. Received one week dismounted drill. 2nd 3rd Gos, 12th Bn departed by train for UNGOK.
25 Jul 49 - Arrived UNGOK (雲谷). The unit was engaged in guarding a RR tunnel, located 2 km S of UNGOK, for 11 months.
28 Jun 50 - Departed UNGOK by train for KAESONG (開城)
2 Jul 50 - Departed KAESONG on foot. Arrived SEOUL, 3 Jul 50. Performed RR guard duty at SEOUL RR station for approx 10 days.
14 Jul 50 - Arrived INCH’ON. Guard duty at INCH’ON RR station and locomotive repair plant for 2 months.
O/a 25 Aug 50 - Replaced by 6th Bn of the 10th RR Security Bridge. 3rd Co departed on foot for KUMHO’ON (金泉). Rejoined the 12th Bn, 10th RR Security Brigade. The 12th Bn was ordered to march to MIRYANG. PW and other members of unit were told that the NKPA had already captured T’AEGU, and other units were now attacking PUSAN. Therefore, MIRYANG was the only town holding out.
O/a 8 Sep 50 - Departed KUMCH’ON on foot with the 12th Bn (approx 650 men) and on 19 Sep 50 arrived 20 km NW of WAEGWAN. Rested for 3 days.
23 Sep 50 - The 12th Div was suddenly attacked by approx 500 US troops spearheaded by four (4) tanks. Completely disorganized by this surprise attack. PW saw the advancing tanks and surrendered to the infantry troops following the tanks.

b. Unit Organization and Strength:
The 10th RR Security Brigade, approx 2,600 men, consisted of the 12th Bn, 6th Bn and two other Bns.
The 12th Bn (APO No 5231) approx 640 men, consisted of four (4) companies.

c. Equipment:
12th Bn had the following arms:
1 x Maxim M1910 HMG at Bn Hq.
16 x DP LMG - 1 per platoon.
128 x PPsh M1941 SMG - two per squad.
ALL others were armed with the M1891/30 rifle and bayonet.

d. Disposition;
The 10th RR Security Guard Brigade 6th Bn was engaged in RR Guard Duty at SEOUL and INCH’ON. The 10th Brigade Hqs was located in SEOUL.

e. Communication:
Condition of roads was good. Bridges were destroyed but temporary sand bag causeways were used by trucks. Railroad to TAEJON operable in early Sep 50.

f. Personalities:
12th Bn CO - LEE, Chong Gwan (이정판); Lt Col; Age 35
3rd co CO - CH’OE, To Do (최도도); Sr Lt; Age 30

g. Morale and Propaganda:
Morale low. PW saw UN propaganda leaflets at KUMCH’ON on or about 10 Sep 50. PW stated that the leaflet was quite effective on all troops.

4. REMARKS:
PW’s induction date was tattooed on his left wrist.
