PW was in good physical condition and was outspoken in expressing his joy that the war was over for him. When his position was overrun by ROK troops he surrendered immediately.
3. TACTICAL INFORMATION:Chronology:
| 29 Jul 50: | Inducted into a replacement regiment in SEOUL. After several days of moving about SEOUL to escape air raids, 4,500 conscripts were assembled. |
| 10 Aug 50: | Conscripts departed on foot for UISONG (義城) travelling by night and resting by day (Before departure, conscripts were told not to worry because they were not leaving for the front, but to replace security units). Travelled through ICH'ON (利川), CHUNGJU (忠州) and arrived at ANDONG (安東) where they remained 5 days. |
| 5 Sep 50: | Arrived at a small commuity near UISONG. During their 3 day stay there the conscripts were sent in small groups to reinforce various units in the vicinity. PW with approx 100 others went as replacements to the 3rd Bn, 3rd Regt, 8th Div, at UIHUNG (義興). |
| o/a 9 Sep 50: | 80 were immediately sent to the smaller units of the Bn but the remaining 20, including PW, were used as litter bearers, and carried wounded to the division hospital in UISONG on two occasions. |
| 12 Sep 50: | 16 of the 20 were transferred to the Bn supply platoon. |
| 17 Sep 50: | PW worked as cook and ammunition bearer. Until 17 Sep 50 enough rice was cooked at each meal for 200 persons (total strength of 3rd Bn, 3rd Regt, 8th Div). |
| 18 Sep 50: | The Supply platoon received orders to cut food to 100 rations. It was learned that the Bn sustained 50% casualties 17 Sep 50 through enemy artillery fire. 10 men from the Supply platoon, including PW, were ordered to replace casualties (the strength of the Bn had decreased to less than 100 men, there being 7-8 officers and EM in Bn Hq, 15 men with 82mm mortars, 37 riflemen). PW was captured by ROK troops while sleeping in his foxhole. |

8th Div Hq at UISONG, 3rd Regimental CP 4-5 km NE of UIHUNG. 10 Sep 50 he heard that II Corps Hq and a hospital were at ANDONG.
Morale and Propaganda:
The morale of the 8th Div in general was extremely low. There were numerous cases of conscript replacements shooting themselves in order to be sent to the rear area hospitals which would mean more and better food and temporary rest. PW actually saw one comrade shoot himself near the elbow to escape being sent to the front line for what he termed certain death.
