2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was intelligent and cooperative. Reliability, fair.

CHRONOLOGY:
Jan 30: Born in HAMGYONG NAMDO, WONSAN (元山), KOREA. Attended 6 years of primary school.
Dec 45: Moved out to CHILIN-CHENG, LUNGCHING (吉林省 龍井市) with his family. Attended 3 years of middle school.
Jan 49: Returned to HOERYONG (會寧) KOREA with his family.
Apr 50: Conscripted into the North Korean Army.
Apr 50: Sent to SARIWON (沙里院) KOREA, Took three months basic training. Assigned to NAMHAE (南海) Div, 105th Regt, 2d Bn.
Jul 50: 1st Bn of the NAMHAE (南海) Div moved out to MOKP’O (木浦).
Sep 50: Retreated from MOKP’O (木浦).
3 Nov 50: Captured at POUN (報恩).

3. SOCIOLOGICAL:
LUNGCHING #1 MIDDLE SCHOOL    LUNGCHING (龍井) CHILIN-SHENG (吉林省) MANCHURIA

Observation:
Attended three years at the #1 LUNGCHING Middle School. Graduated from this school in Dec 49.
Location: (See Sketch - Item #6)
Approx 600 m SW of the LUNGCHING (龍井) RR Station and approx 8 m SE of a Public Security unit barracks.
Description of Building:
The building was “L” shaped, 2 storied brick construction with gable type, galvanized iron roof. Height, approx. 15 m. About 45 class rooms (each measuring approx. 30 m x 20 m).
Total Area:
Approx 400 m x 350 m, included a playground. Enclosed by a wooden fence approx. 1½ m high. A school theater was located in the SW area. Single storied, brick construction with gable type galvanized iron roof. Measuring approx. 50 m x 30 m x 6 m. Capacity: approx. 450 - 500 students. Two or three per month Russian-made educational films were shown to students.
Number of Students and teachers:
800 students, who were divided into five grades, and about 30 Korean teachers were observed. No Chinese or Russians were observed.

MEDICAL SCHOOL           LUNGCHING (龍井)

Approx 300 m S of a road conjunction, as described in attached sketch and approx. 500 m SW of the RR station.
Observation:
Observed a medical school several times, during period mentioned above, by the closest distance of approx. 30 m while passing by on a road in front of the school. The medical school was called the LUNGCHING Medical University by inhabitants in vicinity of LUNGCHING.
Area:
Approx 100 x 50 m. Enclosed by a concrete wall 2 m high. Surrounding area was civilian housing districts.
Building:
a. Main Building - “L” shaped, 2 storied, concrete bldg. with flat roof. The interior was unknown. No smokestack.
b. Unidentified Building - Approx 30 m x 20 m 16 m; 2 storied concrete bldg. with flat roof.
c. Warehouse - Approx 20 m x 7 m x 5 m; single storied brick bldg. with gable type, slate roof. The interior of the whse was unknown to the PW.
d. Garage - Approx 15 m x 7 m x 5 m; single storied bldg with gable type, slate roof. Number of vehicles, unknown.
General Information:
PW stated that this medical school was built by Japanese when MANCHURIA was under occupation by the Japanese, and that this was used as an Army Hospital by the Japanese KWANG-TUNG Army during the period of World War II. PW never entered the Medical University during the period mentioned. Further information about this medical university was unknown.

LOCAL POLICE STATION        LUNGCHING (龍井)

Location: Approx 750 m SW of the LUNGCHING (龍井) RR Station.
Observation: (See Sketch - Item #17)
PW observed local police station of LUNGCHING several times, during the period mentioned above, while passing by on a road in front of it at closest distance of 10 m. PW stated that the local police station was called LUNGCHING Local Security Bureau (龍井公安局) by inhabitants in vicinity of LUNGCHING (龍井) City. The local police station was surrounded by a civilian housing district.
Building:
Dimensions of the building were 15 m x 30 m x 15 x high. 2 storied, brick construction with gable type, slate roof. The interior, unknown.
Guard:
One policeman, armed with a captured Japanese rifle, guarded the station 24 hours a day, standing by the entrance. Guard standing by the entrance wore civilian clothes, but wore patch on left arm, as shown below.

7. ARMED FORCES
PUBLIC SECURITY UNIT        LUNGCHING (龍井)

Location: Next to Local Police Station Bldg (Sketch - Item #17)
Approx 750 m SW of the LUNGCHING (龍井) RR Station and approx 50 m NW of the middle school.
Observation:
PW, while attending three years of the LUNGCHING (龍井) No 1 Middle School during the period mentioned above, observed a Public Security unit almost everyday at the closest distance of approx. 8 m. PW also entered the interior of the Public Security unit three times in Dec 45 for receiving military physical examinations.
Area:
Covered an area of approx. 430 m x 350 m and was enclosed by a concrete plaster brick wall 2½ m high and ½ m thick. The area was level. This public security unit was surrounded by a civilian housing area in the western sector and a grassy land in the southeastern sector.
Description of building:
Hq building:
2 storied, concrete bldg. with gable type, black slate roof.
PW saw the name of the Guard unit written as LUNGCHING GUARD UNIT in Chinese on a wooden plate, which was hung up by the stone gate.
Guard Barracks:
2 storied, concrete building with gable type black slate roof. Height approx. 15 m. Number of rooms were unknown. This guard barracks was equipped with running water and electricity. Unknown number of wooden beds were installed.
Training Field:
Located in the western sector. Covered a sandy area of approx. 350 m x 300 m. PW saw the guards taking military physical training and close order drill every day.
Strength of the Unit:
PW estimated that the Public Security unit was about one bn in strength, consisting of three rifle cos and one heavy machine gun co. Each co composed of 35 civilians and one officer (company commander).
Identification of the Unit:
PW stated that this Public Security unit was not an actual military unit and that all members of this Public Security unit were inhabitants of LUNGCHING (龍井). They wore the patch of their unit, as shown below.
Equipment:
Each member of the unit was armed with Japanese captured rifles and officers were armed with captured German pistols (hearsay). One US-made jeep was for CO’s use.
PW did not know what unit this public security unit was attached to, and where the main unit was located. No further information.
