3. TRANSPORTATION AND COMMUNICATION
WIRELESS STATION        YENCHI (延吉), MANCHURIA

On the outskirts of YENCHI (延吉), approx. 4.5 km NW of the YENCHI (延吉) RR Station.
Observation:
PW often observed this wireless station while driving his car in this area during the above period.
Building and Dimensions:
Two-story brick building with a flat roof measuring about 70 m x 30 m x 17 m.
General Information:
A steel structured antenna approx 7 m high was situated on top of the roof. PW heard from natives that there were radio broadcasting and meteorological stations situated in this wireless station.

STEEL RAILROAD BRIDGE     YENCHI (延吉), MANCHURIA

Approx 3.2 km S of the YENCHI (延吉) RR Station.
Observation:
PW observed this bridge frequently from a distance.
Description and Dimensions:
This bridge was a steel plate girder-type bridge measuring about 30 m in length and 3 m in width and having a water clearance of about 10 m. There were two concrete piers measuring about 3.5 m in diameter situated approx 10 m apart. Depth of river at bridge was about 1 m. There was a wide-gauge single track RR running over the bridge, leading southward to CHAOYANGCHUAN (朝陽川), MANCHURIA. Further details unknown.

CONCRETE BRIDGE        YENCHI (延吉), MANCHURIA

On the S side of YENCHI (延吉), approx. 2.4 km NW of the YENCHI (延吉) RR station.
Description and Dimensions:
The above bridge was a steel structured concrete bridge measuring about 10 m in length and 12 m in width. The height of the bridge from the water surface was approx. 10 m. Depth of the river at the bridge was about 3 m. There were 6 concrete piers measuring about 1 m x 1 m x 10 m placed about 10 m apart. No further details known.

5. ECONOMIC
TRANSFORMER STATION     YENCHI (延吉), MANCHURIA

Location: (Sketch 1 - Item 4)
Along the E side of the RR track which leads northwards to TUMEN (圖們) from YENCHI (延吉), approx. 2 km N of the YENCHI RR Station.
Description and Dimensions:
The transformer station building measured about 5 m x 6 m x 8 m and had a peaked slate roof. Interior details were not known. This was the only transformer station in this city, which obtained the electricity from the LUNGCHING (龍井) electric power plant located about 16 km E of YENCHI (延吉).

7. ARMED FORCES
ARMY HOSPITAL         YENCHI (延吉), MANCHURIA

On the southern part of the city, approx. 2.4 km NW of the YENCHI(延吉) RR Station.
Observation:
PW often observed this hospital while driving his car in this area during the above mentioned period.
Dimension:
Hospital was a 3-story brick building measuring about 100 m x 13 m x 25 m.
General Information: (Hearsay)
PW heard from local people that this is the biggest hospital in this area and about 300 CCF patients were hospitalized here at all times.

SMALL APMS MFG PLANT     TUNGSHIHI (東世邑), MANCHURIA

Location: (Sketch 2 - Item 1)
Within the compound of the TUNGSHIHI (東世邑) airfield, approx. 1.8 km NW of the TUNGSHIHI (東世邑) RR Station.
Observation:
PW was engaged in hauling rifles from this plant to LUNG-CHING (龍井) from time to time during the above-mentioned period.
Buildings and Dimensions: (See Sketch #3)
There were 3 hangers situated on this field which were utilized by this plant. They were constructed of brick with an oval shaped galvanized iron roof. Interior details were unknown.
General Information:
PW stated that the plant mainly manufactured a rifle similar to “model 99 (1939) inf rifle”. Daily production rate was not known. Approx 4,000 employees worked here. Employees were divided into two shifts. Each shift worked 24 hours (sic) straight and had the next 24 hours off. The finished products were hauled to LUNGHIGN (龍井) RR Station by truck and were shipped to YENCHI (延吉), MANCHURIA, by rail.

AIR FIELD             TUNGSHIHI (東世邑), MANCHURIA

Location: (See Sketch 2)
Approx 2.5 km N of the TUNGSHIHI (東世邑) Village and about 1.8 km NW of the TUNGSHIHI (東世邑) RR Station.
Observation:
PW observed this air field frequently while hauling the rifles at the small-arms mfg plant which was located within the compound of the air field area.
Dimensions:
The field covered an area of approx. 1500 m x 1000m and was surrounded by a barbed wire fence. (See Sketch #3)
Runway:
Asphalt runway measuring about 1100 m x 30 m running N to S of the field.
Hangars:
3 brick hangars situated on the N side of the field. They were utilized by the small arms mfg plant located on the field.
Control Tower:
A small control tower constructed of wood measuring about 7 m x 5 m x 2.3 m was situated on top of the troop barracks located at the center of the fields
Aircraft:
PW observed 2 - 3 Japanese fighter planes (single-engine, single-seat) parked along the runway at all times.
Personnel:
PW observed about 100 troops wearing fatigue uniforms going in and out of the troop barracks.
Prevailing Wind:
Usually S to N.
