ASSESSMENT:
PW cooperative, but memory, judgement and general reliability - poor.

CHRONOLOGY:
9 Sep 46 - Left CH'ONGJIN (淸津) KOREA by cargo vessel for VLADIVSTOK. 2000 other Koreans went with him as common laborers.
10 Sep 46 - Arrived VLADIVOSTOK.
12 Sep 46 - Departed for KHABAROVSK by train.
14 Sep 46 - Arrived KHABAROVSK with the 2000 other Koreans.
Mar 47 - Departed KHABAROVSK and arrived IMAN next day.
Jul 47 - Departed IMAN for VOROSHILOV. (One day trip.)
Sep 47 - Departed VOROSHILOV for VLADIVOSTOK.
Feb 48 - Departed VLADIVOSTOK for fishing at CKHOTSK with 3000 Russians and 2000 Koreans by cargo ship.
27 Feb 48 - Arrived OKHOTSK.
3 Sep 48 - Left OKHOTSK by cargo ship with 2000 Koreans for CH'ONGJIN (淸津) KOREA.

5. ECONOMIC:
SAWMILL                IMAN, USSR

OBSERVATION:
PW worked on various construction projects.

DESCRIPTION:
See sketch #2.
PW worked pulling the tinter cut of the river. 70 Koreans worked here with one Russians operating the saw.
PW does not know the source of the electricity.
The lumber processed here was being used in the nearby constructions.
The mill was of wooden construction with a gable type wooden roof. (25 m x 12 m x 8 m.)
The working hours were from 8 AM to 5 PM, 6 days a week.
PAY:
500 to 600 rubles per month.

HOUSING CONSTRUCTION       IMAN, USSR

PW also worked on housing constructions. He states that the houses were all one story and made of wood with a gable type wooden roof. They built about 40 units here.
Dimension of each unit – (8 m x 5 m x 4 m).
The outside of these houses was painted white.
They also built about 15 bricks units with gable type slate roof. (3 m x 5 m x 4 m.) PW heard that the army officers and their families were to live here.
Another five 2 story buildings were made of brick with a gable type slate roof. (10 m x 30 m 13 m.)

GENERAL INFORMATION
UNIFORM FACTORY (Sketch 1, item 2)  DAAN, USSR

PW saw Russian uniforms being made in this factory. The workers were all Russian civilians.
The building was made of wood with a gable type wooden roof. (13 m x 30 m x 5 m.)

SAWMILL                OKHOTSK, USSR

OBSERVATION:
PW worked during the above period unloading and piling the cut lumber.

The timber came down the river and was pulled out of the inlet by two winched which unloaded it onto the timber area. At the timber area, it was loaded on handcarts, pushed up to the vertical saw and cut into lumber. This lumber was taken out by handcarts and unloaded at the lumber area.
3 Russians and 20 Koreans worked here. One Russian took care of the saw and another of the winches, while the third watched over the Korean workers.
The power came from a transformer located within the sawmill.
The lumber was used for making crates to pack fish and other canned goods.
PW says that they worked 10 hours per day, 6 days a week.
The building was of wood with a sheet iron gable type roof. (10 m x 17 m x 5 m.)

3. SOCIOLOGICAL
PRIMARY SCHOOL           OKHOTSK, USSR

School was made of wood with a gable type wooden roof. (17 m x 40 m x 7 m.)

4. ARMED FORCES
SEAPLANE HANGAR           OKHTSK, USSR

LOCATION:

PW always saw two seaplanes there.
The personnel were all Russian naval personnel.
The hangar made of undulated slate (sic) had a gable type slate roof and measure 20 m x 30 m x 10 m.

OKHOTSK                OKHOTSK, USSR
Pvt                   OBS Apr 48 – May 48
OBSERVATION:
PW used to pass through this airfield to go to the mountains on his day off during the above period.
LOCATION:
See sketch #3 (item #4), and sketch #4.
The runway was of dirt and was 50 m x 4 km. On the south side of the runway were three hangars.
PW saw one 2-engine transport in the 3rd hangar and one single-engine plane (believed to be a fighter plane) in the 2nd hangar.
The 1st hangar was empty.
The hangars were of undulated slate (sic) with a gable type undulated (sic) slate roof. (20 m x 30 m x 10 m.)
The signal tower was about 25 m high and had one man standing on top signaling by means of flags.
There were no guards and no antiaircraft guns. No night flying observed.
PW states that he saw about 15 Russian officers on this airfield.
Maintenance and repair on the airfield was done by 5 Russian soldiers.
