ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative but was not too observant. Information is considered fairly reliable because he was at the same plant for about 7 years.

CHRONOLOGY:
5 Aug 42 Arrived SHENYANG (瀋陽), MANCHURIA, and was employed by the Japanese KYOWA KOGYO (協和工業) Company as a clerk.
5 Feb 45 Imprisoned for robbing the company.
15 Aug 45 Released from prison by the Russian Occupation Army.
Aug 45 - Mar 46 Lived with parents at SHANYUANPU (三源浦) and YEHCHUKOU (野猪溝).
Mar 46 Employed by the former KYOWA KOGYO (協和工業) Company as a guard. The same plant was then occupied by the Nationalist Party.
1 Dec 48 The Plant was occupied by the CCF and was renamed the SHENYANG Instrument Plant No 3 (瀋陽機器 第三分廠). PW continued to work at the plant as a guard.
23 Jul 49 Resigned from the plant and planned to go to KOREA to raise money, but upon arriving SINUIJU (新義州), realized he could not pass the border without proper credentials. Therefore he volunteered for the NK ARMY.
24 Jul 49 Received basic training with the MINCHONG (民靑). Training Unit which was a sort of young men’s association.
3 Sep 49 Assigned to the 655th Div, 661st Regt, 2nd Bn, 6th Co, as a rifleman at SINUIIJU (新義州).
5 Sep 49 - 23 Jun 50 Stationed at CHERYONG (載寧). PW was the company clerk at that times.
26 Aug 50 Moved to HADONG (河東) via SUWON (水原), KANGGYONG (江景), YOSU (麗水). PW was injured and was sent back to KONGJU (公州).
6 Oct 50 Surrendered to a local Public Security unit after reading a propaganda leaflet.

1 - TOPOGRAPHY
YEHCHUKOU Village       LIUHO-HSIEH, SHANYUANPU, YEHCHUKOU

PW lived in YEHCHUKOU during the above period helping his parents in farming. The YEHCHUKOU village with 3 other villages were located in a shallow basin about 2,000 m in diameter. The surrounding mountains were about 200 to 300 m high and were covered with low bushes.
There was a small river about 10 m wide located about 10km E of the village. The river could not be used for transportation. There was hardly ever any water in the river and PW does not know of any flood caused by the river.
The soil of the area was mostly a mixture of clay and sand. PW stated that it was difficult to walk because of the mud during the rainy season. Rice, soybeans, corn, and kaoliang (高梁) were the main agricultural products.
The summer season was from the middle of April to the end of October. The winter season was from the beginning of November to the middle of April. Snow lasted from November till April. The average depth of snow was 10 cm and the deepest was 20 cm. The ground froze about 50 cm. Period unknown.

5 - ECONOMIC
Hemp Thread Mfg Plant      SHENYANG(瀋陽), MANCHURIA

The plant was located approximately 1,000 m NWW of the SHENYANG Station and about 500 m W from the street-car track. It was located on HSINGKUNG-CHIEH Street (興工街). Has only observed the plant from the outside once after the plant was occupied by the CCF.
The size of the plant area was unknown. The plant was enclosed by a brick wall about 3 1/2 m high. PW stated that there were 5 buildings in the area which he thought were about 9 m high. All the buildings the area had saw tooth roofs. PW stated that he heard from a fellow worker that the plant was producing hemp thread for cloth and that the thread was taken to some other plant to be made into cloth. The source of supply and the destination of the finished thread was unknown. The number of workers was unknown.

Cotton Mill            SHENYANG, MANCHURIA
Sgt                D/O 1946 - Jul 49
The mill was located approximately 350 m W of the SHENYANG RR Station. PW observed the plant on his way to and from work during the above mentioned period. PW did not observe the entire plant area but stated that the front part of the plant was about 65 m long. A 3 m high brick wall enclosed the plant area. PW did not know what was made out of the cotton. The source of supply, disposition of finished products, and the number of laborers was unknown.

SHENYANG Steel Bridge Plant    SHENYAN, MANCHURIA

The plant was located about 1,000 WNW of the SHENYANG RR Station. It was located on CHIAKUNG (■工) and HSINGKUNG (興工) Streets.
PW observed the plant from the 2d story of the SHENYANG Instrument Plant #3. The plant was producing steel RR bridges, but he did not know how many were produced in 1949. The number of workers was also unknown.

SHENYANG Instrument Plant #2  SHENYAN, MANCHURIA

The plant was located about 500 m NW of the RR station and alongside a spur railroad track. PW observed the plant while going to and from work during the above mentioned period.
The plant area was about 70 m long and 55 m wide and was enclosed by 3 1/2 m-high brick wall. There were 2 identical brick buildings with gable type roofs about 35 m x 9 m x 7 m. One building had a blast furnace (1.2 m in diameter and 3 m high) and a brick chimney about 15 m high. In one of the buildings, moulds for hand pumps, stoves and iron lids were made. The production rate was unknown. There were about 60 people working 8 hours daily. Other details unknown.

SHENYANG Instrument Plant #3  SHENYAN, MANCHURIA

The above plant was located about 500 m NW of the SHENYANG RR station along the RR spur line. It was located on the N side of HSINGKUNG-CHIEH Street. (興工街). PW worked at the plant as a night watchman during the above-mentioned period.
The plant was a former Japanese plant called the KYOWA KOGYO Company (協和工業株式會社). The plant was renamed the SHENYANG Instrument Plant #3 in Dec 48.
The No 3 plant area was about 250 m x 70 m and enclosed by a 3 m-high and 20 cm-thick brick wall. A barbed-wired fence about 30 cm high was located on top of the wall. There were 6 civilian guards who worked on a 24 hour shift.
There were about 12 individual brick buildings, closely grouped.
Building Containing Shops Nos. 1-4: This building was a single story brick building with saw tooth roof measuring 48 m x 40 m x 8 m. There were about 6 saw-tooth peaks, and there was also a brick smoke stack about 17 m high and about 1 m in diameter.
There were four work shops in the building numbered from 1 to 4: namely, finishing, small lathe, milling and polishing, and medium lathe shops. This building was the only shop operating except for workshop No 6. All the machinery installed in the plant was of Japanese make. In 1949, there were 40 small lathes, 12 milling machines, 3 polishing machines and 25 medium lathes in the No 1 to No 4 shops.
There were about 250 civilians working 8 hours daily. The items produced at the plan were various types of gears, nuts and bolts. The finished products were used within Plant #3 and Plant #2.
Workshop No. 5: This work shop was a heat treatment shop but was not used after the CCF occupied the plant. It was a 30 m x 30 m x 10 m brick building with a gable type roof. The smoke stack was made of brick and was about 1.5 m in diameter and approximately 35 m high.
Workshop No. 6: This was a 40 m x 30 m x 18 m brick single-story building and contained 5 large lathes, 12 shapers and 2 planers. This workshop produced iron-wheels and other parts. About 50 civilian worked 8 hours daily. The use and disposition of the finished products were unknown.
Workshop No. 7: This was a medium lathe shop about 48 m x 37 m x 10 m, with gable-type roof. This shop was not in use. There were about 35 medium-size lathes in the buildings.
Workshop No. 8, 9 & 10: These shops were in a 90m x 30 m x 10 m single-story brick building. Two of the shops were pump assembly rooms, and bicycle fenders were produced in the third. This building was not used after CCF occupation.
Workshop No. 11: This shop was a blast furnace and foundry measuring 75 m x 35 m x 30 m. There was a 1.5 m diameter by 3 m-high blast furnace and an electric crane. This shop was not used after occupation by the CCF and was ruined by bombing.
Workshop No. 12: This shop was a 21 m x 14 m x 5 m brick building with a gable type roof. The shop used to produce bicycle fenders but was not in use in 1949.
Office Building (No. 13): This office was a 2-story brick building in which the administration of the plant was taken care of. It measured 29 m x 3 m x 4 m. The 2d story was an auditorium.
Office Building (No. 14): This office was not in use. It measured 37 m x 48 m x 10 m.
Material Warehouse (No. 15): This warehouse contained steel bars. The warehouse measured 40 m x 8 m x 7 m.
Boiler House (No. 16): The boiler house was a 30 m x 25 m x 15 m brick building. The boiler was used to heat the workshops during the winter and was not used during summer. The smoke stack was 1 m in diameter and about 35 m high, made of cement. There was a concrete water tank about 30 m high and was built as follows:
Food Warehouses (No, 17 - 21): These warehouses were all small. Almost no rations were kept in the whse.

TRANSPORTATION:
PW stated that there was a RR spur line which led in from the SHENYANG RR station. The spur lien was mainly used for coal, but after the CCF occupation, no trains used the spur. Trucks were used to haul material.
LABORERS:
There were about 300 civilians working about 8 hours daily, 6 days a week. The workers were free to change jobs anytime they felt like doing so. The average salary was about 9,000 yen; the maximum, 12,000 yen, and the minimum, 6,000 yen. The minimum living expenses for a single man was 8,000 yen.

SPECIAL INFORMATION:
The SHENYANG Plant #3 was the former Japanese KYOWA KOGYO Co (協和工業株式會社) during World War II. No changes were made in the plant after the CCF occupation. The Japanese produced aircraft parts, pumps, bicycle parts and bomb fuses (dia 18 cm). When leaving in Jul 49, PW did not see any progress being made by the CCF in reconstructing the plant.
