FIELD REPORT (2 DIV LDI - 0211) 24 February 1951

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
Either uncooperative and ignorant or just confused. Contradicted his own statements at times and was not sure of what he said. Information not too reliable.

3. CIRCUMSTANCES OF CAPTURE:
25 Dec 50, captured by CCF at PYONGGAN (NK) after hiding in the mountains for a month. (PW was with 5th ROK Div, 16th Regt). During the next 20 days, PW and 200 other ROK soldiers labored for the CCF and received communist lectures one hour daily. 14 Jan 51, PW and 200 ROK prisoners were turned over to NKA V Corps Replacement Regt. 25 Jan 51, all were assigned to 6th Div. After being assigned to 617th Regt, 6th Div, unit began moving southward and arrived at vic 32 km N of CHUPO-RI where they engaged UN Forces.
19 Feb 51, 6th Div retreated northward and PW escaped southward and was later captured by UN Forces.

4. TACTICAL INFORMATION:
a. Chronology:
6th Div intended to capture CHECHON but their plans miscarried when they were attacked by UN Forces approx 32 km N of CHUPO-RI. When 6th Div retreated 19 Feb 51, PW was told by Sqd Ldr that the Div was going to a locality about 35 miles N of DS351-247.

b. T/O & E:
Strength of the 617th Regt was estimated to be 2-3,000 men.
Communication Bn strength was estimated to be about 500 men. Telephones and wireless used in communicating. About 50% of men in the Bn had Russian rifles (160 rd per).
Weapons observed in the 617th Regt were 5 x 60 mm mortars (15 rd per), 2 HMG (5-6 magazines per), 7 LMG (5-6 magazines per) and the men armed with Russian rifles (160 rd per) and PPSH SMG (2 magazines per).

c. Clothing:
All troops wore winter clothing.

d. Medical:
Saw many men from his unit sick with some disease and a doctor told him that the patients were suffering from typhus. Symptoms: high fever, cough and stomach pain.

e. Food:
Insufficient.

f. Morale:
Low, because majority of the men were South Koreans.
