PW though young seemed fairly mature. Nature of his duty prevented him from acquiring much information. Reliability fair.
Chronology:
Feb 47: Inducted into CNA and employed as barber for the 53rd Army, Indp 2nd Arty Regt of MUKDEN.
Nov 48: Captured by CCF with the fall of MUKDEN. Accompanied 348th Regt as barber, traveling to Central and South CHINA.
May 50: 348th Regt arrived HAI CHENG (海城) MANCHURIA by train from HONAN Province.
22 Oct 50: 348th Regt crossed YALU River into SINUIJU. Marched over main highway past UIJU, TAECHON and into vicinity of UNSAN.
27 Oct 50: 348th Regt engaged UN forces at UNSAN and withdrew to the rear, resting for two weeks at TAECH’ON.
Mid Nov 50: Began general offensive southward, by passing PYONGYANG and reaching KORANGPORI o/a 20 Dec 1950. Unit rested.
24 Dec 50: Captured.
Unit Organization and Strength:
38th Army - Composed of 115th, 116th and 117th Divs.
116th Div - Composed of 346th, 347th and 348th Regts.
1st Bn - Composed of 3 Cos.
Strength:
Original strength of 2nd Co was an estimated 162 men. Half of the company, including the company commander was lost at UNSAN. Approx 20 men were drawn from other companies and an estimated 110 men were in 2nd Co as of 20 Dec 1950.
Original strength of 1st Bn was an estimated 500 men. Present strength unknown.
Personality:
KAO, Ko (高可), age - 30, 348th Regt CO. Became Regt CO at HAICHENG o/a May 50. Was Assistant CO until then.
FAN, Hung (苑紅), age - 34. Former 348th Regt CO.
O/a 20 Nov 50, Pvts got 400 NK Won as monthly pay. Sqd leaders got 600 Won. Company Comdr also got 600 Won.
While in MANCHURIA, Pvts got 60,000 Yuan, Plat Leaders got 90,000 Yuan, Company CO 90,000 Yuan and Bn CO, 150,000 Yuan. This was during the summer 50.
While at HONAN Province, Pvts got 2,000 Yuan and Plat Leaders got 4,500 Yuan monthly. This was during the spring of 50.
While at HAICHENG (海城) MANCHURIA PW first saw airplanes with swept back wings. First noticed during Sep, they were seen every four or five days in groups of two to four planes. PW always noted that they were going towards KOREA and were probably coming from MUKDEN.

PW heard an airplane broadcast in UNSAN but the noise of the airplane made the hearing difficult.
