FIELD REPORT (164 MISDI - 1277) 9 December 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:
PW NAME: CHO, Kyong Nae (趙京來) (조경내) (Korean civilian)
RANK: Civilian Informant
EDUCATION: Middle School
AGE: 39
OCCUPATION: Railroad Police (Captain)

2. ASSESSMENT:
The informer was captured by the NKA 4th Div but escaped on 7 Dec 50 and contacted the 17th ROK Regt. He was brought through channels to the ROKA Hq, then brought to this unit for interrogation by KMAG. The informer was very cooperative and spoke willingly. The information seems very reliable.

3. PERSONAL & UNIT HISTORY:
The informer, commander of the 3 RR Police Company (South Korean), was captured by the NKA 4th Division on 24 Nov 50 at a mountain near TAWGWAN-NI (CT 3428) after combat on 24 Nov 50 at a mountain near TAWGWAN-NI (CT 3428) after combat on 24 Nov 50. The 3rd RR Police Company and the 1st Bn, 17th ROK Regt were engaged by the NKA 4th Div on 24 Nov 50.
After being captured, the informer was taken to the Political Security Section of the NKA 5th Regt, 4th Div, located at TAEGWAN-NI, for questioning. The informer convinced the interrogator that he was a civilian working with the ROK Army.
On 28 Nov 50, the informer was taken to the Political Security Section of the 16th Regt, 4th Div located at KUMJONG DONG (機井洞), MAJANG MYON (CT 2441) for further questioning.
On 29 Nov 50, the informer was taken to the Political Affairs Section, 4th Div located at NAKTAL-LI (■■里) (VIC CT 3736) where he was joined by 14 ROK troops of the 17th ROK Regt.
On 2 Dec 50, the informer and 11 others were sent to the Political Section, 4th Div located at KARUGE (기루개) ORIJONG (CT 2937).
On 6th Dec 50, the informer and 11 others were sent to O DONG NI (梧洞里).
On 071700 I Nov 50, the informer, while being sent to CHORWON (CT 4335), escaped enroute at HAKTAL LI and made his way through mountains until he contacted ROK 17th Regt at YONCHON (CT 3117).

4. T/O & E AND STRENGTH OF:
4th Division
The 4th Div was composed of the 5th, 16th, and 18th Rifle Regiments.
The present (5 Dec 50) strength of each regiment was approx 1000 troops.
1 guerrilla company was attached to each regiment.
The organization of each unit was triangular down to squad.
There were approx 25 to 30 men with each platoon.
The units of the 4th Div were armed as follows:

A majority of the men at present with the 4th Div was combat with the unit at the NAKTONG River.
Most of the troops with the NKA 18th Regt spoke Chinese fluently. The 18th Regt was composed of Koreans who served with the CCF in CHINA. They arrived in KOREA before the war started (date unknown). The 18th Regt was referred to as the Liberation Army Personnel (Note: Chinese Peoples Liberation Army) by troops of the 4th Division.
The informer believes that the 4th Div was part of the II Corps.

5. LOCATION AND ACTIVITIES OF UNIT:
The informer heard from troops of the 4th Div that the 4th Div Hq was located at INHONG MYON (CT 2835) as of 3 Dec 50.
The informer observed elements of the 5th Regt, 4th Div at TAEGWAN-NI (CT 3428) on 27 Nov 50.
The informer observed elements of the 16th Regt, 4th Div at MAJANG MYON (CT 2241) on 28 Nov 50.
The informer observed elements of the 18th Regt, 4th Div at O DONG NI (梧洞里) on 6 Dec 50.
Troops were living in civilian homes in the above villages. Two to three men OP’s were situated in every crest near the village where troops were stationed.
The informer heard from troops of the 4th Div that the mission of the 4th Div was to hold the present area until the arrival of the CCF. After the CCF reached the 4th Div area, the 4th Div and the CCF were to attack SEOUL.
The informer was told that 500,000 CCF troops were in KOREA and that elements of the CCF have already reached mountains near SIBYON-NI (BT 9942).
The village people in the 4th Div area were being told to sew Chinese Communist Flags to welcome the CCF.
A North Korean Guerrilla Band known as the “BARUCHISAN” (PARTISAN) Unit (strength unknown) was located in CHORWON (CT 4335) area, o/a 7 Dec 50.
The 9th North Korean Division (strength approx 4,000) was located in the KUMHWA (CT 6538) area, o/a 7 Dec 50.

6. PERSONALITIES:
LEE, (FNU) (李), Maj Gen (小將), Ass’t Div Commander, 4th Division.
KIM, Pyong Ho (金炳■), Lt Col (中佐), Chief Political Section (Note: Possibly intelligence), 4th Division.
KIM, Chae Hoe (金在會), Major (少佐), Chief Organization Control Section, 4th Division.

7. REPLACEMENTS:
The 4th Div was not conscripting, but 3 men who volunteered were inducted into the Division.

8. FOOD & AMMO SUPPLIES:
4th Div food was procured locally by “taxing” farmers. Ammo supply was very low with no new supply coming in.

9. MORALE:
Morale of the men in the 4th Div was fairly high because they believe that final victory will be won by the NKA with CCF aid.
US PWs:
The informer heard from the Chief Political Section, 4th Div, that US PWs are interned in PW Camps in HOERYONG. The same man told the informer that Maj Gen DEAN was killed in action near TAEJON.

10. SIGNAL INFORMATION:
Telephone communication (line) was conducted between battalions and regiments.
Wireless communication conducted between regiments and higher echelons.
