FIELD REPORT (IX CORPS MISD - 0199) 15 December 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was fairly cooperative and the information obtained is fairly reliable, however due to his short stay with the present unit, PW was not too familiar with the organization.

3. T/O & E, DISPOSITION:
1. PW was inducted into service 27 Feb 50 at HAMHUNG and assigned to the 2nd Div. 25 Jun 50, PW’s 2nd Div departed for HYOPCHON, by way of HWACHON, CHONGJU and KUMCHON. O/a Sep 50, PW and unknown number of men started retreating north, by way of TAEJON and TAEBAEK SAN. After crossing north of the 38th parallel, they separated and headed for their homes. At CHORWON PW was stopped by an NKA guard and again put into service. Later, he was assigned to the 4th Div and given the rank of Jr Lt. CHORWON was the assembly point for all NKA stragglers retreating from the south. 5 Dec, PW was assigned to the 18 Regt as In Off. 080200 Dec, while PW and others were enroute to KAESONG, they were attacked by the 10th ROK Regt in the vicinity of TOSAN and dispersed. 081400 Dec PW was captured.
2. II Corps was composed of the 4th and 9th Divs and the 8th Ind Regt. The II Corps Headquarters was believed located somewhere N of CHORWON.
The strength of PW’s 4th Div was approx 5000 men. It was composed of the 5th, 16th and 18th and an Arty Regt. Attached directly to the Div also were a Sig, Eng and Med Bns and a Rcn Co.
As of 7 Dec 50, the 5th and the 16th Regts were located at SANGNYONG (CT1731). The 18th Regt departed SANGNYONG on 7 Dec for KAESONG but they were attacked by the 10th ROK Regt and were dispersed in the vicinity of TOSAN on 080200 Dec 50. PW believes they are still there.
The 4th Div had 2 Mort (Cal unk) with about 400 rds of shells each, 27 HMGs, 45 LMGs and an undetermined number of am. 2/3 of the men in the Div had small arms, such as rifles (Russ), PPsh SMGs, M-1 rifles, Carbines and pistols.
3. 18th Regt was to head toward KAESONG to harass the enemy by constructing road blocks and ambushes.
4. Abandoned am supplies were picked up to replenish unit requirements.
Food was confiscated from local villages and consumed, once a day.
5. All movements of troops were on foot during night.
Communication was by radio or telephone. There was one radio and telephone set at Div and Regt.
6. PERSONALITIES:

(He is also believed to be the Ass’t CG of the 4th Div)
7. PW was told by unit culture officer that the UN Forces are retreating and if the NKA kept up their resistance they would be victorious.
PW heard from refugees that 300,000 CCF troops are heading south.
