FIELD REPORT (164 MISDI - 1271) 29 November 1950

1. PERSONAL DETAILS:

2. ASSESSMENT:
PW was cooperative.
Information seems reliable but limited because of his duty and travel in a foreign country.
PW was in good physical condition at time of interrogation.

3. PERSONAL & UNIT HISTORY:
PW was conscripted on 18 Dec 48 into a Reserve Regt (CCF) at CHINGAN HSIEN (慶安縣).
The Reserve Regt departed from CHINGAN HSIEN by train and arrived at PAICHI-PU (白旗堡) on 21 Dec 48.
After arriving at PAICHI PU, PW was assigned to the 4th Co, 2nd Bn, 339th Regt, 113th Div, 38th Army, 4th Field Army.
On 21 Dec 48 the entire 38th Army departed PAICHI-PU on foot and arrived in North China (華北) on 30 Dec 48.
Between Jan 49 and Jan 50, the 38th Army fought against the Chinese Nationalist Army in North China, YUNGCHING HSIEN (永淸縣), along YANG-TSU-CHIANG (揚子江), HUNAN SHENG (河南省), KWANGSI (廣西) and in the HUNAN SHENG area.
After the termination of the war, the 38th Army travelled to ANTUNG (安東) from HUNAN SHENG by train and arrived at KAI YUAN HSIEN (開原縣) in Jul 50.
On 17 Oct 50, the entire 339th Regt of the 113th Div, 38th Army, departed from KAI-YUAN HSIEN on foot and crossed over the RR bridge into MANPOJIN, KOREA on the same day.
The 38th Army did not participate in the invasion of HAINAN Island.

PW did not know how many armies are in the 4th Field Army other than the 38th Army.
The 38th Army was composed of 3 Inf Divisions (112th, 113th, 114th).
The 113th Div was composed of 3 Inf Regiments (337th, 338th, 339th).
The 339th Regt was composed of 3 Inf Battalions.
The 2nd Bn was composed of 3 Inf Companies (4th, 5th, 6th) and HMG Co.
The 4th Co was composed of 3 Rifle Platoons and 60mm Mortar Platoon.
Each Rifle Platoon was composed of 3 Rifle squads.

There was one North Korean interpreter in the PW’s 4th Co, who came from MANCHURIA with them.
The 339th Regt, 113th Div is intact and under the same chain of command now as it was prior to crossing the YALU.
Parts of the 339th Regt had never been integrated into KOREA units.

5. LOCATION & ACTIVITIES OF UNITS:
PW stated that the 2nd Bn did not engage in construction of defensive positions while travelling South after crossing the YALU from MANPOJIN, KOREA on 17 Oct 50.
After arriving at a mountain (location unknown) 20 Nov 50, the entire 2nd Bn was attacked by UN troops and was disorganized.
During the battle, PW deserted and was captured by ROK troops the same day.
PW did not know the location and activities of other units in the 339th Regt because of the unfamiliar geography.

PW did not see any Soviet advisers in the 38th Army.

7. FOOD & AMMUNITION SUPPLIES:
Troops of the 339th Regt brought over 5 days ration with them when they crossed the YALU. After their rations were exhausted, they confiscated food from nearby villages as they advanced South.
No food supply was received in KOREA.
The fighting troops received one issue of 80 rds small arms ammo when they left KAIYUAN HSIEN 17 Oct 50. They had never been issued any ammo supplies in KOREA.

8. MORALE:
Morale of the 339th Regt was low because of the foot shortage and the lack of ammunition and weapons.

9. SIGNAL COMMUNICATION:
The 2nd Bn had one Field telephone.
Below the company levels, messengers were used.

10. GENERAL INFORMATION:
PW was not a volunteer for Korean service.
PW never heard anything about the Iron and Steel Brigade.
PW did not know of any Japanese units in the CCF.

The Chinese are recruiting in MANCHURIA.
Former Nationalist soldiers, if captured, were conscripted into the CCF. All captured equipment was utilized in the present war.
